I'll be back at 1:30 p.m. to do the chat. I hope they are not all as insulting as the first one. Loren

Now that Guenther has retired, when can we expect your announcement?

Frank ... I wouldn't bother myself with someone that I dislike as much as you obviously dislike me. But thanks anyway. Loren ...
I'll be back to complete this at 1:30. I have a luncheon that I don't want to miss.

What type of preparation goes on before
a Major Leauge game? Does the manager
gather the team around and tell them
how he wants them to play and what
the other pitcher's tendecies are?
I know they take batting practice
but I do not know what else goes on.
Thanks.

jim, I'm not sure that everyone does it the same, but the pitching coach definitely goes over the hitters with his pitchers, and I'd assume similar discussions go on between the batting coach and the hitters. But, frankly, I don't know the inner workings. Loren

Wasn't a big fan of the all field turf at Illinois Field when it was first installed, but think it's great now. Do you see it as a big advantage when we play at home, and will it affect our play in the conference tournament?

Jim, Sadorus, I also had my doubts, but like you, I think the field turf is working, and it saves a lot of games that would be rained out. Yes, I think it is an advantage for the team that is accustomed to it. I don't know what the minor league field in Columbus is like, but none of the teams have played on it, as far as I know. Loren

Loren,

I know Phillips is a UI grad, but would he leave Northwestern to go to another school in conference?

Dan, I think Jim Phillips would be a tremendous athletic director for Illinois, but for several reasons I don't think he will come. He has a huge family up there -- from father on down -- and I'm told that he is in line for a huge contract. I think he's a good fit up there. I think Illinois will have to look elsewhere but, if it was me, I'd ask Jim first about his interest. Loren

Did you expect the baseball team to finish first in the league coming into the season?

Loren Tate wrote on May 23, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Andy, based on the Big Ten season that I expected and that I saw, I wouldn't expect any of them to finish first. Illinois survived in a miracle kind of season. If they started it over, any of a half-dozen or more teams might win it. Loren
