Sept. 20 Brian Barnhart chat

Thursday, September 20, 2012 - 11:00am

What's John Groce's secret? Can Tim Beckman pull off the same thing? Is Saturday's crowd going to top 30,000? Is Illinois volleyball going to win the Big Ten? Ask anything of Voice of the Illini Brian Barnhart, who chats at 11 a.m. Thursdays.

Illini football fans are a mysterious bunch. I clearly remember a mere 45,000 for a Thanksgiving day

game against Northwestern when the Big Ten championship was on the line on a beautiful day

for football, so put me in the camp that questions the committment of the fan base as it relates to

stadium attendance. Losing the halftime Chief has unquestionably muted the energy at halftime, and

the overall gameday atmosphere both in and outside the stadium needs to overhauled. First priority

would be avoiding 11:00am starts at least during the non-conference, and finding a way to energize

the fan base because it clearly goes deeper than wins and losses. Your thoughts?

I think that Illini fans are looking for more consistency from the football program. They have seen really good years (Sugar Bowl 2001 season)...and (Rose Bowl---2007 season)....followed by mediocre seasons.  The last two years have seen winning seasons and bowl victories...but some of the momentum of the bowl win over Baylor...then the 6-0 start last year...was lost when the team went 0-6 and Coach Zook was fired.

I think there is the sense of starting over again right now. Coach Beckman is doing a great job getting the word out about Illini football and meeting the fans.  Now he and his team need some wins....starting Saturday night with Louisiana Tech.

The 45,000 attending in 2001 had more to do with the Thanksgiving Holiday than anything else in my opinion.  The 11 am starts are a factor also.

Is Sheelhaase going to play on Saturday?  Does Beckman seem to be keeping player injury and status closer to the vest than previous Illini coaches?  The Sheelhaase ankle injury seems like this big mystery.

My feeling is he will play.

Most football coaches are pretty tight-lipped when it comes to injuries.  They dont want the other team to know what is happening.  I think that is the case with Coach Beckman.

So much for the Ilini hiring a middling mid-major basketball coach!  While we haven't seen the in game coaching skills yet, Groce's recruiting is off to a great start.  What was his recruiting reputation at Ohio?

Coach Groce has done a great job with the recruiting at Illinois so far.  He has a really good personality and can make just about anyone around him feel comfortable.  I am not surprised he is off to a good start in that area.  Plus..he proved at Ohio he can coach too.

Brian, thanks for your chats!  Tell me why i still feel like i dont trust this defense after week 2 at Arizona State to go out and hold La. Tech to less than 56 pts.  And second of all, do you think ROT should get a chance to start this weekend?  After all he is on a roll with 5 touchdowns from last week.  Why not let him go out there and let er rip.   Thanks! Go ILLINI!

I would feel very comfortable with Reilly O'Toole starting on Saturday.  I think the pace of the La Tech offense can pose problems...but i think the Illini have learned their lesson from Arizona State.

The Bulldogs also give up a lot of points also
