Oct. 31 Illini basketball chat (MJ's debut)

Wednesday, October 31, 2012 - 12:30pm

Say hello to Marcus Jackson, HQ's new go-to guy for Illinois and Big Ten basketball. He's been tagging along with Paul Klee for the last couple years - now he gets to take over for the Colorado-bound beat writer. He'll be chatting every Wednesday - starting this week. Submit questions any time.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:29 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Good afternoon and welcome to another Illinois basketball chat. This is my first one and I'm looking forward to getting more acquainted with the beat and giving you guys the best information I can. I've got some big shoes to fill. You guys were lucky to have Paul Klee for six-plus seasons. He's one of the best in the business.

A lot of Illini fans have reached out through Twitter, email and in person to congratulate me on the new assignenment and I appreciate that.

We've got a bunch of questions already. I'll be here for about an hour, so let's get to it.

California Illini fan — 12:30 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Welcome MJ.   I've enjoyed your writing and input for the past few years.  Glad you took over the basketball beat.  Here's my question.

Recall there was quite a flap last year on the part of Tom Izzo and a few others about what AD Mike Thomas said when he was asked mid-year about Bruce Webber.   Thomas said words to the effect that he would evaluate Coach Webber at the end of the year.  Izzo and company said that was tantamount to deathblow because it did not administration support for Bruce Webber.  Loren Tate and others observed (correctly) that what Thomas said was the same thing he would say about any coach, so Thomas's comments should not have been such a big deal.

Fast forward to this year.  Thomas has been asked about Coach Beckman.  Was Thomas' response that he will evaluate Beckman at the end of the year?  I don't think it was.  Am I wrong about that?  What's your take?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:33 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

California,

Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm not completely familiar with exactly what words Thomas has used when asked about the future of Beckman and I'd hate to speculate what he meant without talking with Mike myself. That being said, if you're trying to read into things, it probably means that Beckman is in his first year and he's likely going to be around next season, regardless of how many losses the team accumulates.

Big Walt — 12:33 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

How are the Illini that were in NBA camp fairing as the rosters are starting to be finalized?

Ps. Congrats on the debut chat.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:37 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Big Walt,

Thanks. Brian Cook was waived by the Wizards a couple of days ago and I'm uncertain what's next for the big man. Jamar Smith was with the Celtics during much of camp, but they let the sharp-shooter go. I ran into Jamar at Ubben last week and he said he's likely headed to Israel to play in the Super League out there. A guy who can shoot like Jamar will always have a place in pro basketball. Demetri McCamey was waived by the Rockets last week and he's likely headed overseas.

Mr. Burrell — 12:37 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

whats up marcus? Brandon from Thornwood. looking forward to your chats..... Klee did a lot of bragging bout being a better basketball player than you.. that cant be right.. can it?

anyway. maybe im an optimist but is their a chance that groce and the new staff get this team to play up to their potential and rankings and this team is better than expected? i mean we do have 6 top 100 players on this team if that isnt the most in the big ten its very close (i counted a few months back, dont remember the results), soild vets in bertrand, sam and griff. i know the lack of  ballhandlers cant be ignored but their is a lot of talent. rankings can be wrong but these kids are better than what theyve what they have shown so far.

also do you think we would be better served rolling the last 2013 ride and focusing in on top talent like KBD and Austin or waiting til the spring and seeing if we can add more bodies... my vote is for the former.

Eddy Curry got a new job! Peace.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:44 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

BB,

Good to hear from you. In speaking with a few of the players, they're excited about playing for and learning under the new staff. It remains to be seen if that translates to them playing at a higher level, but the enthusiasm and energy level is up a notch from recent years. Unless you're talking about guys rated among the Top 10, Top 5, recruiting rankins are to be taken with a grain of salt most times. What the illini have are a lot of great athletes, but they haven't developed into great basketball players as expected. The biggest problem is dribbling and passing. I agree these guys are better than what they've shown and as the season progresses, you'll see most of them come closer to reaching their potential. These guys are going to work with them extensively on their weaknesses.

Klee beat me one time in H-O-R-S-E, the only time I've ever seen him touch a basketball. He was stone sober. I had a few pops prior to the matchup. You do the math.

Great to see Eddy back in the league after all he's been through. Fact of the day: I threw Eddy his first alley-oop in a high school basketball game.

Dan Bloeme — 12:44 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Welcome Marcus,

Have fun with these chats, they can get pretty lively.

Illini look like they can be pretty potent this year and surprise people as long as the ball handling holds up, turnovers kept to a minumum and Nnanna stays out of foul trouble.
How does Coach Groce ensure these keys are addressed and not become trouble?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:49 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Dan,

Thanks, I'll do my best. That's a big "if". Ball handling needs to improve and when the Purdues and Michigan States play that physical defense on the perimeter, we'll see how far the Illini have come in that area. The staff has been working the guards in practice with different drills to shore up the ball handling, one being sending a surprise defender from the blindside to condition their nerves. With Nnanna, as he becomes a more confident defender, he'll cut down on the fouls. At this stage, that's just something they're dealing with. Nnanna is the most coachable guy on the team, so I expect you'll see him clean it up going forward.

Palatine — 12:50 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Welcome to the Chat Marcus!

I was curious on your assessment of Egwu's play on Saturday.  Did the foul trouble not allow him to play as well as hee has played in practices?  Do you think there is a chance that McClaurin or Griffey replace him in the starting linup down the road based on their rebounding performances?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 12:52 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Palatine,

Thanks. Egwu has really impressed the staff and the fould trouble did limit his production Saturday. That's an area he will have to improve and I think he will. At this point, I don't see him being replaced by either of those guys. It was just one game and Nnanna is going to be fine. He won't be out-worked. Sam and Tyler will see plenty of action, though.

Anonymous Jim — 12:53 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Congrats Marcus and best of luck to you.  While we are all excited about the future under coach Groce, I still believe that this could turn out to be a great year given the talent and experience on the roster.  Thoughts?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:02 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Jim,

Thanks. The future is bright under John Groce and his staff. Remember, this is a team that lost 12 of its last 15 games last season. It's best player — Meyers Leonard — was a lottery pick and isn't around anymore. They can get better, but that won't necessarily translate into wins. The Big Ten is going to be tough. Three teams are ranked in the Top 5 in the country and two others are in the Top 25. Three of the six players on the Preseason All-America team are from the Big Ten, too. Wins are going to be hard to come by once the conference season comes starts.

BTW, Meyers debuts tonight for the Blazers against the Lakers. I spoke with Robinson athletic director Terry Roche this morning and he said he's got his DVR set in case he's not home for the tip. The folks down there can't get enough Meyers and they know everything that's going on in his career.

EJ in Denver — 01:02 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Marcus -

Thanks for doing this...looking forward to reading you going forward.

Two things:

1) Since I'm here in Denver, where is Klee landing for work and who will he be covering?

2) Who is your bet to make the most improvement over last year?

Thanks

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:07 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

EJ,

Klee got a job as a columnist covering mainly the Broncos for The Gazette out of Colorado Springs. He's going to be living in Denver. He'll also do some work covering the Nuggets and Rockies, too.

Look for Nnanna Egwu to make the biggest jump this year. He's really stood out to the coaching staff since they arrived. Myke Henry should also flourish under the new staff. They really like what he's going to be able to provide playing the 4. The coaches really like what each of these guys provides on the offensive glass.

Also, when you get a chance, take a look at D.J. Richardson. He looks like a completely different player than he did the last two years. One former Illini told me recently that D.J. looks like the guy he saw tearing it up at Peoria Central. He's putting the ball on the floor more and is playing with a swagger.

KEVIN L — 01:07 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

congrats on the new assignment!  klee will be missed around these parts, but im sure you will fill his shoes admirably.  how does myke henry's presence on the floor affect the defense of this team.  i know last year he was a defensive liability but it seems as though there might be a new philosophy on the defensive end of the floor.  henry can fill it up and needs to be on the floor so i like what, i feel the coaching staff is doing, on defense.  Also, is the coaching staff using paul at the point to push abrams?  say what you want, but abrams is a leader.  paul doesn't have the intangibles neccessary to play the point.  abrams knows when to drive, when to kick, when to shoot.  turnovers are a problem, but i think he can "play those out" of the equation.  Paul seems to me to be more of a 2 or 3 than a point guard.  again, congrats on the assignment and i look forward to reading your content.

Thanks

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:13 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Kevin,

Thanks. Myke has never made defense a prioroty, he's a scorer and that's what he wants to do. He is getting better on the defensive end and the coaching staff is keeping on him and making sure he improves in that area. He's been their most consistent rebounder and that's why he's starting now and why he'll play a lot of minutes.

Paul is playing the point because Tracy hasn't played that well in recent weeks. He's in a big funk right now. Until he starts playing better, he'll get his minutes off the bench. Brandon will probably make money as a wing in the future, but right now he's your point guard. It's a good thing for him. When he does play the wing, his game will improve tremendously because of the experience playing point guard under John Groce. It also speaks to what Groce thinks of Paul You've read so much about how important point guards are to the first-year coach and to put the ball in Paul's hands is a big deal.

Drew — 01:14 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Hey Marcus,

I was at the exhibition game this past weekend. I was very impressed with Coach Groce's intensity and his teaching to his players as they came off the floor. I love his intensity, I could hear every word he was saying and I was sitting up in the C level.

But I wanted to ask about something not having to do with the Illini on the court. About ten minutes prior to gametime, there was a video played on the jumbotron that showed all the kids from Chicago who went to Illinois with Kayne West's "Homecoming" playing in the video. The video was awesome and I hope it made a profound impact on all the big-time Chicago recruits who were at the game. Also, there was a video during halftime I believe (I might be wrong) that was all about Deron Williams. There were clips from him at Illinois, in the NBA, and most importantly in the Olympics and recieving his gold medal. That video was awesome and also hopefully left an image in the recruits minds who were at the game.

It really seems that Coach Groce and his staff "get it" in regards to recruiting. Do you get this feeling that he really "gets it" in terms of recruiting?

I can't wait for basektball season to begin, I cant put up with this football garbage anymore.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:18 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Drew,

They definitely get it. Groce was named the Recruiter of the Year in 2006 by Rivals.com. That was after he landed Mike Conley, Greg Oden and Co. at Ohio State. Eventually, they're going to get it going in terms of recruiting. Kendrick Nunn has been the biggest name so far, but, as Paul said, the fact that they were finalists for Demetrius Jackson and Xavier Rathan-Mayes after being here for such a short time speaks volumes about their ability to connect with kids.

AJ's Dad — 01:19 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Hi Marcus. I can't help but feel that this years Illini team is gonna be much better than predicted. I also wonder if some of the writers that are closer to the Illini are underselling this team a little bit. There definitely seems to be plenty of excitement and I understand why fans are holding their breath waiting to see what Groce can do with these kids, but am I crazy to think we may have one of the most underrated group of good athletes? How are Bertrand, Griffey, Henry, and Langford doing currently?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:25 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

AJ's Dad,

They could very well end up being better than expected, but as I said earlier, that might not necessarily translate to wins with the Big Ten so tough. The key to having a good season will be winning in the nonconference and maintaining in conference play. Wisconsin losing Josh Gasser is a significant blow, so the Badgers won't be as tough as projected. That helps Illinois.

Bertrand has improved his outside shooting since last season. Groce says he's shooting better than 50 percent from behind the three-point line and if he can add that to his mid-range game, he'll be a formidable offensive option. Tyler is the best shooter on the team and if he rebounds and plays as hard as he did Saturday throughout the season, he'll see a consistent increase in minutes. Henry scores in his sleep and he's been their best rebounder. He's your starting 4. Langford is still a work in progress. He wasn't apart of the eight-man rotation you saw Saturday night. He's been working with Paris Parham at improving his overall game. He spent much of the offseason competing alongside Rayvonte Rice and Joesph Bertrand.

Welcome to chat Marcus!

Your following a great reporter so no pressure, right?  Tell us what steps Klee took to obtain the information we all want to know and what you will do, the same or different, to enhance the chat product?

Also, how are ticket sales this year versus past years?  I'm excited for the season and our new coach.  Wondering if ticket sales reflect any excitement?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:34 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

QC,

Hope I can fill the huge shoes the little guy left for me.

If you know Paul, then you know he's great at building relationships with people. He's as comfortable talking to a millionaire donor as he is a kid from the toughest part of Chicago. He's actually a lot like John Groce in that sense. So, he was able to connect with all kinds of people to gather the information he did while on the beat. My goal is do get to know as many people around the program and around college basketball to get as much insight as I can. The more and more I'm around, the more in depth my information will become.

Season tickets are about identical to where they were a season ago, I'm told. Where Illinois is struggling is with the students. Student ticket sales are down right now.

Marcus....watched the Lewis game and saw a lot of what we saw under weber. Can't stop the dribble drive, too dependent on the 3, can't keep the opponent out of the lane, no inside game , hardly anything from the transition game and those are just a few. Considering our opponent, we 're looking at a long year. I saw some highlights of the Missouri game and we looked like a HS team compared to Mo. JG has done a lot of talking and I was expecting a little more out of this team. Are we looking at a below .500 year? Thanks.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:41 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Anonymous,

Groce has an idea of what he wants to do, but it's going to take time. The biggest issue is there isn't the dynamic point guard on the roster who can facilitate the way the coaches want. The transition game should get better, but quite honestly, the personnel isn't equipped to handle it all right now. Again, these are the same players who went 17-15 last year.

They did shoot a lot of 3s Saturday, particularly early, but most of those came on kickouts after someone had broken down his defender. There weren't the 3s at the end of the shot clock or the ill-advised 3. Later on, after guys broke down the defender, they either tried to finish at the basket or dumped it to another guy in the lane. One play that stands out was Brandon Paul hitting Myke Henry in the lane after getting by his guy. There was an emphasis on getting Nnanna Egwu and Sam McLaurin the ball in the pain, too.

Brent — 01:46 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Marcus, congrats on your new job and the best of luck.  In the past there has been a list of the preseason expectations for how the teams in the Big Ten will finish 1-12 put together by a media member instead of the 1-3 put out by the big ten, do you know where to find the list? Thanks.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:48 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Brent,

Thank you. Bob Baptist of the Columbus Dispatch conducts the media poll. Two writers who cover each team in the league votes. Illinois was picked ninth.

Check out the full poll here.

Who is more sartorialistic: You or Paul Klee?

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:51 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

Anonymous,

I asked Lindsey, a good friend of mine and Paul's, for her answer. Lindsey is a fashion expert. She said me, but I must say, Paul really stepped his game up during his time in Champaign.

Marcus Jackson (moderator) — 01:52 PM on Wed, 10/31/2012

I've got to get going (still have some football stuff to do). Thanks for all the questions and apologies to the ones I didn't get to. Email me at mjackson@news-gazette.com if you wish. I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks.
