Welcome to another week of high school questions. Here we go.
For your helmet stickers last week. Did you consider Unity's Conner Grace who had 238 yds on 26 carries with two touchdowns. He also had 5 tackles on defense.
Thanks - GO ROCKETS!
Hi Randy. Absolutley, I did, especially after he had at least 100 yards rushing in each half during the win over Tuscola. My thinking came down to the fact that I covered the game, and he had some recognition in the game story. I wanted to recognize some people who didn't get the benefit of having a reporter at their game. You know, spread the wealth, so to speak, as much as possible. I made an exception with the fullback from Champaign Central because the nature of his contribution in the final minutes of the Maroons' one-point win. Thanks for the question. He is very much on the radar!
Fred,Good call on Central beating Urbana .Reminds me of the old days pounding the football down their throat. Smash mouth football.2 Wins in a row against Eisenhower. Great coaching ,stop the turnovers.
Hi Tom. Well, that was one I got right, but missed on several others, so all in all not a good week for the prognosticator!!!I do believe the Maroons will extend their winning streak to two games this week. Hard to believe that hasn't happened since 2009, a span of 35 games. Not sure how many more wins there will be this season, but the team is getting off to a good start. I don't think the team can get by with throwing just one pass in a lot of games, but the running attack was certainly solid against Urbana. If it works, keep going back to it. That's a good philosophy. That has been a Central staple over the years. Remember the Tom Stewart-coached teams which might throw about one pass per quarter?
Fred,Looks like another bad week for Urbana.Bloomington in a Romp. Urbana still with 2 or 3 starters out. 2 from Injuies in Central Game and may be Patton.not back yet for discipline reasons. Coaching still has a lot to be desired and not enough quality players and of course still no kicking game. Defense weak. Can't beat a team who turns the ball over 6 times.Hard times for Urbana in future.May win 2 games 3 at most.
Hi Tom. When a high school team is at less than full strength, it certainly affects the game plan and when they can and can't do. At the college and professional levels, you have capable backups ready to step in. Not many high schools have someone in reserve who is as good -- or close to being as good -- as the starter. Back earlier when I predicted a five-win season for the Tigers it was under the assumption that the key players would be healthy and eligible each week. The team is certainly behind the eight-ball now, but I wouldn't write the season off yet. Bloomington showed it is beatable last week. The question is whether it can happen two weeks in a row. It should be an advantage for the Tigers to be playing at home. How about that schedule? For the first five weeks -- and for six of the first eight weeks -- the team leaves Champaign County just twice. Always nice not to have those long road trips.
That's a wrap for this week. Check back next week to see what the hot topics will be. Thanks to all who participated this week.
