On Wednesdays, basketball beat writer Marcus Jackson answers your questions. Submit them any time.
Hey, thanks for taking a few minutes to stop by for another chat. Unfortunately, our time os going to be pretty short today, just got confirmation for something I'm working on for Sunday's basketball page involving a UI recruit that I've got to make myself available for. I'll get to a couple of questions and then get going. As always, email me with anything pressing (email@example.com).
I see that Glynn Watson was one of 21 players nationally, included in the USA FIBA U18 team. Brother of Demetri McCamey and a 4 star point guard prospect. Why haven't the Illini offered him a scholarship?
Watson is a very good player and he'll be a real good college player wherever he lands. But you can't take everybody and Watson is really kind of similar to a few players on the Illinois roster already. Nunn, Cosby, etc. He's more of a combo and they're pretty well set on the wing for the next few years. They need a point guard I believe the thinking is there are some guys out there on the board better suited to play the point.
Any discussions about Big Man camps for our big,s? Seems it might be time well spent especially for Morgan and Colbert.
As of right now, there are not any plans for the guys to go out. Something might pop up to change that, but at this point, no plans have been made.
Since it is looking more and more like the Illini will not get Brunson what point guard do you think they are most likely to get? Also in your opinion what happens if the Illini do not end of with a point guard in the 15 class or can Tate become a starter in the Big Ten at some point in his career?
I think Jawun Evans is a good possibility. Illinois has done well with his recruitment, as it has with a number of guys. In the unlikely event they don't get a 2015 point guard, maybe you'll see them hit the transfer market hard or look for a junior college guy. Who knows. If Tate makes a big jump this offseason in terms of his strength and his shooting, he could. Those were his areas of weakness as a freshman. Everything else was good, but he's got to improve in those areas. It doesn't hurt at all to have him.
Does the staff take the first point guard they get a answer from or do they continue to recruit everyone and let the numbers fall where they might as far as scholarships?
I'm not sure I completely understand the question. If a guy commits, yes, you take him. You don't offer guys unless you're ready to bring him on board. What happens when the first guy commits is the others see that and realize it might be best for them to look elsewhere. If you get a point guard, the focus then turns to getting a big man.
Hey, sorry, but I've got to run now. Apologies for cutting it so short. If I didn't get to yours, email me (mjackson@news-gazette) and I'll get back to you. Be sure to check out the Sunday college basketball page. We'll have plenty of info here on the website and in The News-Gazette.
