July 6 Ask the Sports Editor chat

Thursday, July 6, 2017 - 2:00pm

With Year in Review coverage coming up this weekend (preps) and next (Illinois), it's almost time to hit the reset button and turn focus to the next school year. What do you want to see from The News-Gazette sports section? What could be the biggest storylines this fall? Do you know someone who has an interesting story to tell? Anything is fair game as sports editor Matt Daniels tackles your questions in his 2 p.m. chat on Thursday. Feel free to submit questions ahead of time.

Afternoon everyone.

Matt Daniels here for another weekly chat on a sunny, warm and humid early July Thursday in Champaign-Urbana.

Hope you caught the podcast our legendary columnist Loren Tate did earlier this week with Brad Underwood. You can find the 20-minute question-and-answer here on our website.

Speaking of Tate, he is returning to writing four columns a week, starting this Sunday, after he took his annual two-month summer hiatus. Glad to have him back.

Also, be on the lookout in late August for our annual 100-page IlliniHQ football yearbook. Staff writers Bob Asmussen and Scott Richey have been hard at work on it for the last two months, along with our photo staff, in what will be another thorough and comprehensive season preview for Lovie Smith's program ahead of the 2017 season.

Not many questions in the hopper at the moment, but I'll keep the chat open until about 2:40 p.m., so feel free to stop by and ask whatever is on your mind.

Given the Univerity's dependence on the State of Illinois for its finances, are the state's budget woes having an impact on recruiting?  If not, why not?  If so, in which way and how great is the impact?

Hey Zekiah Swamp,

I would say no when it pertains to Illinois athletics since the DIA uses money that is not tied to money the state would give the university.

The athletic department is solely funded through donations, with a large chunk coming from the media rights distribution, which should allocate about $50 million to Illinois for the upcoming school year, as Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said last month in his wide-expanding interview with local media.

It's not a good look for our state, though, given the dire financial circumstances it faces and the seemingly endless gridlock that happens in Springfield.

The state budget woes may be on the mind of some UI athletes, but I would garner a large majority of potential sports recruits don't pay it too much mind when they are looking at different colleges.

Looks like that's the end of any questions in this week's chat.

No worries. I'll be back next Thursday (same time, same place) for another weekly chat.

Be on the lookout for our Preps Year in Review in this Sunday's sports section, Loren Tate's first column since late April and plenty more.

I'm on "SportsTalk," tomorrow at 5 p.m. on WDWS 1400-AM. Feel free to join the show either by calling in at 217-356-9397 or texting in at 217-351-5357.

Enjoy the rest of the week everyone and stay cool!
