“Sustainable agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities” http://www.sustainabletable.org/intro/whatis/
Do today’s policy makers ever consider such a notion, or that the industrialized agricultural industry may actually practice it in any form? From all practical appearances it seems the answer is no.
Ahhh yes, the joys of industrialized, mega farmed, genetically mutated foods.
Besides the toxins we ingest every day from the agricultural bounty of CHEEP foods, we now must contend with Glyphosate resistant weeds that have figure out how to also ignore the poison sprayed upon the genetically modified crops, engineered to ignore and absorb the poisons.
Monsanto has made billions in profits creating these monsters as they defect the genome of corn and beans to accommodate their products. In the end, you and I will suffer for their greed and pay not only a higher price but the possible destruction of the remaining 6 corn strains left on the planet.
Kewl, supper weeds that will destroy harvesting equipment, I can see the trailer of the new SciFi movie now!
If the following link is not official enough, you can toon into AM580’s market report, heard daily at 2:00 on WILL to learn more about this rapidly growing problem. Oh that’s right! It’s probably not official because it’s a liberal, left wing organization that never provides any kind of value to our society, unlike Murdock.s FOX News that determines what you decide, while they hack your phone.
Pulled probably 400 Water Hemp from my ground this year, 40 to 100 year old seeds brought to the surface by plowing. Can’t wait to see what happens when the super plants are brought to life 60 years from now.

Once again, one of our local TV stations followed the prime directive and did their part in the propaganda campaign. It was a most lovely Eichmannesk report that not only guaranteed to make their corporate Masters more money, but helped cloud the consumers mind.
Just like the hack-job they did on promoting the flu vaccine several weeks back (see flu thread), they once again proved, just how much of a tabloid journalist they really are. Never bothering to present an alternative view on the subject, but going all out in promoting the interests of international corporations, whose primary intent is in controlling our food supply.
The report featured one of the many welfare recipients, the kind that drives a $50,000 vehicle getting 12 mile to the gallon, whose welfare checks are code named “subsidies”. A man making the most he’s probably ever made in his life, telling us that all is ok and we should not fear higher food prices, and - he didn’t believe Ethanol is the reason why corn is so high.
The report was all about promoting what is wrong as being good and what is good as being wrong, never bothering to include any voices of discord on the subject. Never looking behind the curtain that hides the real intent, a media conglomerate who for years have used our airwaves to publicly promote their Right Wing Regressive views and intent, with large portions of their profitability coming from the International Agri-Industrial and Pharmaceutical industries.
It was however mentioned that a dollar rise in corn amounted to a few cent increase in a box of cereal, but never bothered to mention the tens of millions of poor in South American who will see their food cost raise dollar-for-dollar because it’s a primary staple of their diet.
No mention was made that only through our tax dollars does the Ethanol industry even exist. A product that takes more energy to produce than it provides, an industry that IS the primary reason why corn prices are so high and climbing.
Never did they mention that corn will soon have to be rationed because our inventories are nearly all gone. Food from people’s bellies - used to power the millions of 15 mile to the gallon pickup trucks that rarely carry anything except the gluttonous driver. Machines that help little boys feel like the men they wish they were, like those they see on TV commercials.
Of course nothing was ever said about the rise in all commodity prices, because every available acre is now being used to grow corn, pushing everything from cotton to sunflowers higher. In fact, last year, one of the nations premier farmer and commodity consultants stated; “it was the first year he could ever remember that he could plant anything and be guaranteed a profit”. And it’s only gotten better for him this year.
The robot reporter apparently never thought to asked about “wheat,” the most primal and basic food in our lives. The fact that there is no human consumable wheat available on the open market is apparently of no concern to be reported. And no good corporate reporter would ever mention that the remaining animal wheat is being consumed at an ever increasing rate to feed our livestock, once again because of high corn prices. Meanwhile, all of the wheat producing areas around the world are under weather related stress and we may see a dramatic drop in production this year.
Yes the Masters have us where they want us, consuming the genetically modified grains that contain toxic gene’s, used to kill insects. Having us pay taxes to supplement an industry that cannot exist with out our welfare, an industry that consumes food for fuel that drives up prices of all commodities. Then, as we get sick from the poisons that they feed us, we run to the pharmaceuticals, which poison us even more through synthetic chemical compounds that pollute not only our bodies but the environment into which we defecate.
Man you gotta love their ingenuity and admire their ability to manipulate not only us but our political system of which they now control.
Why do you think their hired thugs in Washington are doing what their doing, even willing to shut down the government for their international masters. It’s the primary reason why the Regressive Pit Bulls in Washington are going after NPR and every decent human services program.
Having now been given the kill command by their handlers and with the backing of tens of millions of middle aged white men chanting Limbaughese slogans, the Regressive political operatives attack anything of human sociality, while promoting everything Corporate. With special dispensations given to “offense spending,” assuring that our military industrial complex continues to provide world supremacy, so that all food sources and production will be under corporate control, euphemistically now called “democracy”.
Gotta love how they do it, don’t you?
And so the deception continues.
Recently a local TV affiliate, promoted flu shots for ailments that were not confirmed to be the flu (see flu thread). Now their network, on the evening news last night, lied in their report that the rising food costs were because of the instability in the Middle East.
It’s so handy to blame those wanting freedom, especially after we spent decades supporting Middle East dictators. Nearly all of whom are Sunni’s that abused tortured and killed their opponent Shia rivals, who are now are in revolt along with anyone else who dares want freedom.
Never mind and of course never report the fact that food prices have been climbing for months and one reason why the people are in revolt because they can no longer afford to eat.
Never mind that a national farm association has repeatedly sided with international corporation who conspire to control all food production and distribution. Never mind that that same association with local representation all over the country, have helped destroy the small farmer and any hope of sustainable agriculture.
Never mind that world wide, we are in a crisis mode for grain, created by the massive increase in Ethanol production, shortages created through your tax dollar subsidy. Consumption of food for fuel that will create even greater food shortages, as all crops become short supplied because corn becomes one of the most profitable crops, crowding out the others.
Never mind that the unbridled capitalism that the regressive hawks have turned loose upon us, now tramples beneath their industrialized hooves any hope for tomorrow. Letting the stock market predators who see greener pastures than those of Wall Street, now speculate in the commodity markets, inflating even further those commodities already under pressure.
Never mind that beginning later this year, grains will have to be rationed due to these issues and heaven help us if there is any weather related crisis, because the entire world will erupt as it goes hungry.
You think gas prices are high? Wait until Christmas, because if you think driving to work bankrupts you, wait until you try and buy the holiday meal.
The reason why we should be concerned about the cost and availability of food is that historically, food has many times been the catalyst for massive political and military upheaval.
France’s revolution is a grand example, Germany’s inflationary ride that gave power to Hitler is another and the list goes on. Content people with full bellies have little incentive to revolt, to say nothing of the cost to us as prices go up due to scarcity.
Here in America we now begin to see the food lines grow to unprecedented proportions, raising the cost to us all through a thousand cuts of hunger. A trend that could end in radical revolt as more and more go hungry while loosing their homes to bankers.

One of the great legacies of George the H’s reign was the unplugging of all our safety systems intended to protect the citizenry from the pounding hoof’s of unbridled capitalism. This denial of protection extended throughout the entire Federal government, resulting in potentially lethal consequences of Colony Collapse.

The above link has several hours worth of reading links on the subject, I would also recommend beginning with the book Omnivores Dilemma in learning about these issues, as it is the best primer to begin with.
Also, I invite you to Vermilion county to drive the roads of our 130,000 acre watershed to see the destruction, see our blackened North Fork river, visit our contaminated Lake Vermilion and have a swim enjoying the illness you have afterward. If you want I could give you a personal tour.
As for further verification, like William D said, it’s a click away. However, I will point out one thing you will not find - anything valid on ethanol energy conversion statistics and the reason why?
Like the war on Pot, you can always tell when your being lied to about claims such as Pot is bad or Ethanol good, as there are NO supporting statistics or documentation to support those claims.
Because if there was statistical research published on these subjects that supported their positions, they would parade it and fly it from the highest pole. But they don’t, because if they did release the known data, they couldn’t get away with the con game they’re running.
Mothers Flesh
At the recent Illinois state fair, a group of state agricultural associations involved in crop and animal production, announced they were beginning a public relations campaign. Their goal is to counter research showing, “that consumers like farmers, but have doubts about modern farming methods.”
With this in mind it seemed appropriate to provide you with some talking points of your own, to have available the next time you meet an Agri-Business person. Let’s begin with the greatest agricultural con game of all time - ethanol.
So how does ethanol help our energy independence, when it takes more energy to produce a gallon of ethanol than a gallon of ethanol provides? No wonder the Bush Administration spent huge sums of our tax dollars on it! And speaking of low performance, you might want to note that ethanol only has (E) 85% of the thermal energy of gasoline.
Bio fuels such as ethanol have been shown to produce many times more of the green house gas CO2 than does gasoline. Especially when you factor in the huge energy consumption associated in planting, harvesting, processing and transporting ethanol. A product that cannot be distributed through our current pipeline infrastructure since ethanol would destroy it.
And speaking of destruction, without your tax dollars the ethanol industry would collapse overnight and has only existed since its creation, not from market forces but by tax payer funding through the agricultural welfare system.
Immediately following the Bush administration’s enthusiastic support through government funding of ethanol, corn commodity markets shot up to record levels, forcing a great hardship on the poor of South America who saw their primary food staple double in cost over night.
Then there are the security and health issues. With homeland security having total dictatorial powers in times of crisis, will people go hungry in order to feed the machines of war with food from the fields? And who gets priority, the energy companies or crying children when a massive crop failure occurs, such as the one that occurred in Russia this year?
Meanwhile, recent medical studies continue to indicate that fructose (corn syrup) found in nearly everything eaten today, may actually feed and nurture cancer cells. To say nothing of the obesity epidemic that has risen in tandem with the increased use of fructose.
As for quality of food, how does continual feeding of antibiotics to cows that stand 24 hours a day in their own excrement and urine help assure my health? How does feeding corn to cows whose bodies were never intended to eat such things and who must be slaughtered early or their livers will fail because of eating corn, make a better quality meat?
And please… until you have eaten grass feed organic beef, do not regurgitate the programmed line that corn fed beef is better.
Recently we’ve seen what kind of calamity can occur when we industrialize agriculture, warehousing millions of animals in factory designs that can only be maintained through massive antibiotic usage. Centralized systems that when failing, create a nationwide food and medical crisis that increases the cost for us all and sometimes the ultimate cost in life.
Complex and destructive industrial systems of animal confinement that will eventually breed super bugs resistant to any current treatment, causing acute food shortages. Drugs fed by the ton to animals we eat, creating huge profit centers for international pharmaceuticals who make them, antibiotics that the Government has warmed agriculture to begin curtailing because the threat is growing daily.
Then there’s the destruction of the land, the nurturing Mother of us all, who continues to be neglected and abused. Around my organic farm today the land is sterile, no life, no bio-diversity. Our little farm is an organic oasis in the middle of the corn-bean desert, assaulted regularly by the storms of poison. Poisons in many forms, from the sprays used on the crops to the crops themselves.
Locally we see our Counties water reservoir continue to fill with Mother’s rich soils. Land stripped away by those who see no harm in what they do, assuring everyone that they are good stewards of Mother’s gift. Yet their work can be seen clearly in a river that cannot be seen through, where Mother’s flesh has been poisoned, ripped from her and sent to a watery grave.
Of course the saddest thing in all of this is the impact we have on millions of others far removed. Once some of Mother’s flesh has settled to the bottom of Lake Vermilion, the rest along with the poisons and energy intensive nitrogen used by agriculture, ends up in the Gulf of Mexico, where it destroys sea life in massive dead zones.
Then we have better living through chemistry.
After sixty years of continual and ever increasing chemical use, we have now evolved (Darwinized) herbicide resistant weeds that can no longer be controlled. Weeds that have adapted to the chemicals and have become so robust as to render current herbicides useless and harvesting equipment fruitless.
Today, Frankenstein crops are all the rage in an agricultural lifestyle once called husbandry. They’re called GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) that have been genetically engineered in the laboratory to be resistant to herbicides and/or to create their own poisons. Sewn together monsters with heinous potentials, some that have now escaped into the world to run amuck and begin terrorizing Mother’s floral and creature children.
These are Frankenstein species that can now begin to blend with other plants, potentially creating unknown calamities. These are toxic field crops that we eat everyday in our foods and are never told about, crops that insects pollinate, carrying destruction to their hives and colonies.
And what do international corporations, growers and suppliers do in response to all of this, why tout “cheaper” foods as something positive, while seed companies sue those who would dare keep their traditional open-pollinated seeds from former generations, in planting next years crop.
Sue them, because the farmer’s seed now shows genetic markers of the corporations patented seed that jumped fence and polluted the farmer’s crop. And what’s a poor farmer to due when their seed has been taken away? Why buy the expensive and patented “hybrid” seed from those who sued him.
And all of this is at the industrialized agriculture end of the story, an area now dominated and politically controlled by international corporations. Now these same international conglomerates have their sights set on you and your neighbor, those pesky civilian critters who keep eating away at their profits by feeding each other.
To further assure long term and complete monopoly of the food supply, our purchased politicians have introduced Senate Bill S 510, called the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010. A law that will make it not only illegal for the population to keep seeds from year to year but will make it a crime to grow, own, trade, transport, share, or feed each other from our gardens.
Don’t you love it when a plan comes together for multi-national corporations, our politicians puppeteers.
Lastly, at the for-mentioned Illinois State Fair event an Illinois farmer stated, “there are some folk’s who are trying to discredit agriculture”. I don’t know about you but it doesn’t appear that they really need any help from us, as they seem to be doing just fine on their own.
However, what is desperately needed, is an intervention by the village before the village ends up starving for the benefit of the few, who wallow delightfully in the filth of greed and false pride.
So don’t forget… visit a farmer’s market soon while there’s still time, before they’re featured on America’s Most Wanted and on the run for dealing veggies.
Pentellier: Please provide documentation for the claims made in what you worte.
selguy,
It's a forum post, not a dissertation. Everything he brought up can be found over and over with just a cursory search. Over the decades, I've seen crop production go from a largely mechanical process to a chemical one. I've seen livestock production grow more and more dependent upon confinement systems and pharmaceuticals (hormones and antibiotics primarily). The focus has been on economies of scale and uniformity of the end product, not in the quality or safety of our food supply.
With the current systems in place, I guess it is up to us consumers to be vigilant about what we're buying and eating and that job is getting tougher all the time. Personally I get tired of constantly having to compare products and services in our predatory consumer-based society. Someone is always taking advantage be it health care, information systems, services, insurance, finance/banking/investing, and unfortunately, even the foods we eat.
As to using our food crops for fuel. Why not? We're not the ones who are starving.
Prepare for huge increases in all food costs, since your tax dollars are helping create a shortage through increased production in a fuel (Ethanol) that takes more energy to produce than it supplies while causing larger quantities of green house gases than gasoline,.
Not to mention the fact that we grow corn with Anhydrous Ammonia which is incredibly energy intensive to manufacture and with the devaluation of the dollar its price will skyrocket as our commodities become cheaper to overseas purchase.
Food for Fuel – you bet!
So enjoy your SUV as our kids go hungry.
