Media Bias and Influence

Immediately following the the Obama presidential election, there were a ton of stories and chatter about "The End of the Republican Party."  Pundits wondered how far the right would have to move to the middle  to be relevant again.  Turns out republicans needed to move back to the right to achieve that goal.

Fast forward a few months and it looks like democrats might take a shellacking in the upcoming elections.  And now I wonder, is it me, or is the mainstream media reacting by running damage control for democrats?

In regards to the last part

In regards to the last part "mainstream media running damage for the democrats" I have no opinion currently since I watch little news and only glance over the Gazette. BUT as for the past Presidents, when I was born Truman was Pres. I don't know how kind the press was to Harry. He'd be my fav democrat if I had to have one.
Ike was popular all around, so they probably didn't give him an awful time.
Kennedy they loved.
Johnson was their buddy too.
Of course, Nixon they loathed. (Dan Rather's eyes told it all.)
Ford they made into a betraying, (Nixon pardon) stumbling and "Poland is not under Communist influence" buffoon.
Carter was a good old boy but probably one modern Pres. who could've been recalled if that were possible.
Reagan had such universal appeal across the boards, the media may have conceded to his popularity.
Bush1 was made into a liar (read my lips) while Clinton played the media like a Stadivarius. Bush 2 was probably a close 2nd to Nixon in incurring the wrath of the media.
So far my impression is that Obama has gotten the most free pass of any President outside of Kennedy.
So, yes, in my subjective, over-simplified, opinion it seems very natural for the mainstream media to lean to the left. To lean to the right would literally be an oxymoron.

The Republicans were declared all but dead after Goldwater in '64.....It took them till the 90s to gain any majority in the Congress, too. They've survived since around the 1860s. They must've done something right to last this long.
Regards,

A pamphlet with all

A pamphlet with all candidates showing what they have done, what they want to do, their positions pro/con should be made available for mandatory reading prior to any citizen voting to insure that voters have some knowledge of what they are doing and why. This redundant policy of voting based on politics, beauty or characterization is business as usual in these miss america elections. Disabling voters to make decisions based on values and standards is the source of corruption.

The Republican party is not

The Republican party is not going to succeed in November because they are "moving farther to the right." In fact, they are probably going to lose a few seats (the Delaware Senate seat, for example) because they chose extreme candidates instead of more sensible, electable nominees.

The Republican party is going to win in November because the Democrats are in charge right now and the economy is not going well. It is no fault of the Democrats, of course, just as it is no fault of the Republicans if the economy goes bad when they are in power. Our economy lends itself to boom and bust periods that have little or nothing to do with politics. The current bust period has been amplified by the negligence of our elected officials (both Democrats and the GOP).

As for your media conspiracy charges, they are nothing new from the paranoid far right. Anyone who disagrees with anything they say must be working in conspiracy against conservatives.

The people who said the Republican party had "ended" after the 2008 elections were idiots, just like the people who will say that Democratic party ideals have been repudiated once they lose a bunch of seats next month.

Actually, I agree with some

Actually, I agree with some of what you're saying. The federal government doesn't have as much control of the economy as some give them credit for, in that ups and downs are going to occur and sometimes the party in power gets the unjust blame or credit. You're also right that those who were predicting the end of the republican party, shall we say, forgot some history. And finally, you're right that the current recession has been amplified by neglect of elected officials. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the two biggest causes of the housing collapse. They were purchasing loans from the banks, and had they tightened up their underwriting guidelines this whole problem could have been avoided. That problem still exists today and has not been addressed even in all this talk of financial reform.

However, democrats losing seats in the house and senate in the upcoming election will be accurately defined as a repudiation of left wing ideals. People aren't happy with the health care reform bill that was passed, and they are worried about the out of control spending habits of Obama. They can see perfectly well that his stimulus packages don't work, regardless of how many jobs he claims to have "saved" and how many construction signs are erected in his name. They're concerned about the long term ramifications. They're looking for a government that is a little more, fair and balanced....?

I don't think there is a "conspiracy," although the Journolist didn't get much mainstream media attention, and that truly was a conspiracy. I don't think most news writers who submit stories and headline writers are working together like those in the Journolist, but collectively I believe much of the work has a tint to the left.
