The real cost, effect, and goal of the Occupy Space Movement
First of all, I'm not talking about the result of "starting a conversation" about money and it's effect on our policitical system. I believe it's clear that the Occupy Spacers don't really care about money in policitics. What they really care about is where the money is coming from. To Occupy Spacers, money from the private sector or corporations is generally bad, and money from private/public unions or from left wing pacs is just fine. That much is clear from all the corporate greed slogans. I particularly like the "If it's too big to fail, it's too big," sign I saw at the latest Occupy CU protest over the weekend. This is the perfect example of why they are not the "non-partisan" group they ascribe themselves to be. Ask any Occupy Spacer if the state pension system is too big to fail. Ask any Occupy Spacer of the teacher's pension system is too big to fail. Ask any Occupy Spacer what part of the federal government, besides the military which we already know most Occupy Spacers view with contempt, is too big to fail.
So what is the effect of this latest attempt by the Occupy Spacers to shut down ports all over the east coast? What is their goal? Let me first answer the last question. Who cares what their goal is? They don't have any specific goals, only pie in the sky nonsense that cannot be achieved. The effect of this most recent port shut down, if they are able to do it, will actually hurt the poorest among us the most. But the Occupy Spacers don't care because they don't think their actions through. So let's assume they shut down the ports for 3 days. First, the people working the docks will get a few unpaid vacation days, which I'm sure they'll enjoy one paycheck away from Christmas. Second, eventually the docks will start running again, and they'll be behind so they'll have to play catch-up, which means some will have to put in a bunch more hours right around Christmas and New Years, which I'm sure they'll be grateful for. Third, and most importantly, it's going to cost the entire chain more money. So what will the result be? Whatever is on the ship will probably cost more money to buy when it finally hits the shelves thanks to the Movement. Who will that affect most negatively? Answer: the people with the least amount of money - the poor. Occupy Spacers don't care about the poor, they only care that some people have more money than they do, and they would like the govenment to take it from the people they define as rich, and then redistribute it to them. "Them" being defined as the protesters.
It's time for some serious discussion on how the real 99% are going to deal with these Occupy Spacers. Occupy Spacers claim the 99%, but they are not even close to the 99%. In fact, they are the rounding error on the population who have decided they are going to try to fundamentally transform a system of capitalism that has given birth to the strongest country in the world, and they are trying to accomplish this with absolutely no plan, or leadership, or even an end goal in mind. Is 99% of the population of Champaign-Urbana out on the street holding silly signs? Does 99% of the population want the ports all along the west coast shut down? Do 99% of the population want to pay for all the defaulted student loans? Is 99% of the population interested in this chaotic bid for socialism? Let's go to the Magic 8 Ball for our answers... Shaking.... Waiting..... Answer: My sources say, No.
