URBANA – Provena Covenant Medical Center and Provena United Samaritans Medical Center will bring in a new contract physicians group to staff their emergency departments next year.

The hospitals said they will be ending their relationship with Emergency Consultants Inc., a Michigan company that staffs hospital emergency departments in 16 states, and hiring Dallas-based EmCare.

EmCare provides contract emergency room doctors at 300 hospitals in 39 states. The company says it treats 5 million patients a year.

Emergency room staffs at the two departments were just told of the upcoming change, Gretchen Wesner, spokeswoman for the two hospitals, said Wednesday afternoon.

The change will be effective Jan. 1, and EmCare will evaluate the possibility of keeping some of the current physicians employed by ECI at the two hospitals, she said.

Wesner said the quality of care offered by ECI doctors wasn't an issue, but Provena won't discuss reasons for the change.

"It's one of these business decisions," she added.
