Group sponsors 10K guided walk starting at Danville library

DANVILLE – The Ridgewalkers Walking Club is sponsoring a 10K guided walk beginning at 10 a.m. April 17 at the Danville Public Library, 319 N. Vermilion St.

Sanctioned by the American Volksmarch Association (AVA), a member of the International Federation of Popular Sports (IVV), the walk is for credit only. The trail is not marked, since it is guided.

The degree of difficulty is on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the hardest. Most of the trail has paved surfaces and will accommodate baby strollers, but people in wheelchairs may have difficulty making the transition between paved trails, especially in inclement weather.

Pets are welcome, but must be leashed and under control at all times. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Littering is prohibited.

All participants at the sanctioned event are eligible for international awards for events completed and distance accumulated. The official record books for the awards will be available for $5. This event counts toward acquisition of IVV Achievement Awards.

The trail will include opportunities to log categories of Artistic Heritage, Carnegie Libraries, Firehouses, Honoring Law Enforcement, Railroad Heritage and Veteran Memorials. To accumulate points, walkers sign up through the walking organizations to complete various tasks over a series of walks during a set time period.

Registration for the walk is from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at the library only; no early registration is being offered.

The event is free, but with credit fees for those who care to participate.
