With a recent spate of good weather, perhaps you are ready to start some projects that you have put off. It is now time to get up and at 'em.
If you like refinishing but hate stripping, as I do, consider other options such as calling Corrine Turner at 762-2996. She will strip your furniture, and you can do the refinishing yourself — or in some cases she might do both.
Turner's shop is between Monticello and Champaign at 1358 E 1700 Road N. She is set to open the first of June. I have used her services numerous times, and she does good work at a reasonable price.
Two more sources for complete restoration jobs:
— Mike Richards at Phoenix Restorations, between Monticello and Deland at 1864 North 600 Road E, Monticello. His phone is 762-7372.
— The Fix-It-Shop is at 217 S. David St., Sidney. You can contact the shop at 688-3700. Ask for Chris, and she will answer any and all of your questions.
I have used both of these services on more than one occasion and was completely satisfied.
Here are more suggestions:
— Sandblasting. For small stuff, smaller than a 12-pack, go north of Thomasboro to Berggie Mfg on the east side of U.S. 45. Berggie does the rock signs. For large sandblasting (lawn furniture) try Richard Grant at 372-0815; he also does spray painting.
— Chair caning. Call the aforementioned Fix-It Shop, 688-3700; Marilyn Querry, 384-5473; Earl Rich, 412-7333 or 309-928-9510; Dave Burge, 621-4875; or The Cane Shop, 765-245-2143.
— Woodworking. I will recommend two craftsmen, one in Champaign and one in Urbana. Both have done jobs for me, and both have helped out the Preservation and Conservation Association when called upon. Brent Wesselman runs the wood shop for Armstrong Lumber in east Urbana, and his phone number is 419-1520. Ralph Smalley is one block north of the PACA warehouse at 36 E. Columbia St., C, and his phone number is 352-6333.
— Lamp repair. Try Monty Calhoun in Decatur at 433-3591 or John Miller of John's Repair Shop at 398-3848. IBETICANFIX IT is Don Molnar's handle, and you can call him at 586-4310 or 840-3206. Or call Al Bean in Arcola at 493-3333 or 493-5933.
