UI team off to nationals

URBANA — The University of Illinois Ultimate team has made it to the nationals seven of the last 10 years.

But not in 2012. So when the team bought Coach Walden Nelson an iPad last year as a gift, he would not accept it.

Neal Phelps, a co-captain and former Monticello standout, has held on to the tablet because the team won its regional last month in Rockford.

And now, the UI Ultimate team is competing this week again at nationals in Madison, Wis. That puts the UI in the Top 20 of college teams.

The team dates back a couple decades (the team is unsure of the exact date) and has repeatedly conquered at the regional level.
