Group seeks participants for fundraising walk
CHAMPAIGN — C-U at Home is looking for participants for its fundraiser walk through Hessel Park, One Summer Day.
It will be held rain or shine from 9 to 11 a.m. June 29 in Champaign's Hessel Park.
An organization working to find homes for Champaign-Urbana's most vulnerable homeless people, C-U at Home hopes to raise $20,000 through this fundraiser by registering 200 walkers each raising at least $100.
Melany Jackson, C-U at Home's executive director, said the money raised will be used to hire a part-time social worker who would spend time with the organization's residents, help them establish short-term and long-term goals and ways of accomplishing them, and to refer them to agencies that can help them.
C-U at Home currently has five residents living in five rental houses, and the organization currently lacks money to hire someone to provide case management services for them, she said.
The first 50 people to register for One Summer Day will be given grocery carts to push, and others are encouraged to bring wagons, bicycles and strollers to join in the walk.
People attending are asked to bring items for the homeless to fill the grocery carts, including socks, deodorant, razors, laundry detergent and fresh produce.
These donated items will be shared with other local agencies serving the homeless.
