Getting Personal: Rod Sickler

Each week, we offer an email Q&A with a local personality. Today, Paul Wood chats with 52-year-old Champaign resident Rod Sickler, the owner of Rod Sickler Salon & Spa, Clutch Cuts and Images by Rod & Co. He also is an international stage artist for Sexy Hair Concepts, Los Angeles.

What time do you typically get up? What do you do the first hour of the morning?

6:30. Read The News-Gazette (the paper version), eat breakfast and listen to Kevin and Sarah on Mix 94.5.

What did you have for lunch today? Where? With whom?

Chicken breast, salad with egg and balsamic vinaigrette, and water in my office, by myself.

Best high school memory?

Acting in the school play "Up the Down Staircase" my senior year.

Tell me about your favorite pair of shoes.

Any pair that looks fashionable and are comfortable enough to stand in for 12 hours.

What does a perfect Sunday afternoon include?

Lying by the pool, in the sun, with my girlfriend, Callie.

Was there one book you read as a child that you still cherish? Own? Read?

"Old Yeller."

Where on Earth are you dying to go? Why?

To Guam, to see my son and granddaughter, because he is there serving in the U.S. Air Force.

Tell me about your favorite pet.

A German shepherd in my teen years named Cindy.

Have you discovered that you are becoming like one of your parents? Which one and how?

My father; he was a workaholic.

What would you order for your last meal?

All the junk food I could get my hands on!

What can you not live without?

Of course my girlfriend and my family, friends and staff.

Who do you have on your iPod?

Every genre of music, mostly playlists for my Sexy Hair shows or for my band Radio 6.

What's the happiest memory of your life?

Too many to pick.

If you could host a dinner party with any three living people in the world, whom would you invite?

Callie Keith, Zac Sickler and Teghan Sickler

What's the best advice you've ever been given?

Look both ways before you cross.

What's your best piece of advice?

Most of life's great catastrophes never happened.

What was your first job and how much did you make an hour?

Working as a service station attendant pumping gas for $1.65 an hour — and 5 cents for every quart of oil I sold.

What was a pivotal decision in your career and how did you arrive at that decision?

To open Rod Sickler Salon & Spa in Champaign. I wanted to do it for several years prior but decided it was more important to wait until my son graduated from high school so I could be in Rantoul full-time.

Do you have a bad habit? What is it?

Yes, I have a terrible sweet tooth!

How do you handle a stressful situation?

I always try to face it straight on because I have realized over the years that the anxiety is usually way worse than the solution.
