Nominations sought for 3 major awards

CHAMPAIGN — Organizers of the countywide celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. are collecting nominations for honoring a Champaign County individual or organization demonstrating a deep commitment to the betterment of the community.

The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. Nov. 15; they should be submitted in writing to City of Champaign, Community Relations Office, 102 N. Neil St., C, 61820; or emailed to communityrelations@ci.champaign.il.us.

The 13th annual King celebration is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Jan. 17 at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1501 S. Neil St., C. The cities of Champaign and Urbana, Champaign County, Parkland College and the University of Illinois are preparing for the celebration, which features three major awards:

— The James R. Burgess Jr.-Susan Freiburg Humanitarian Award, which honors the efforts of individuals and organizations who improve the human condition by alleviating suffering and contributing to the basic human dignity of those in need;

— The Doris Hoskins Prestigious Community Service Award, which honors individuals and organizations engaged in outstanding volunteerism; and

— The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Outstanding Achievement Award, which honors individuals and organizations that work for social justice in the spirit of King.
