URBANA — The Champaign-Urbana Design Organization and the User Experience Book Club of C-U will begin hosting on Feb. 15 a Sketch Club.
The Saturday afternoon workshop will introduce anyone to simple sketching techniques to explore and communicate ideas.
In the context of developing software, sketching can help understand people who will use the technology, help us come up with multiple solutions to a problem, and help communicate ideas to teammates. Participants will be asked to read one of four books ahead of time; workshop leaders will guide each of the four groups in trying the techniques discussed in the books.
— "Sketching User Experiences: The Workbook" by Bill Buxton et al.
— "See What I Mean" by Kevin Cheng.
— "Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels" by Scott McCloud.
— "The Sketchnote Handbook" by Mike Rohde.
Participants may enter a raffle to win a free copy of Cheng's "See What I Mean" by sharing a photo of their favorite writing/drawing instrument.
The club also will offer a few group activities and a chance to socialize before and after the meeting, at the Pixo offices, 121 W. Goose Alley, in downtown Urbana.
There will also be goody bags for each participant, and some will be chosen at random to win bigger prizes from sponsors who include Axure, Art Coop, Rosenfeld Media, Pilot Pens, UI Stencils, O'Reilly and Pixo.
The registration fee is $5; the deadline to register is Feb. 8.
