Japan House's spring open house Saturday

URBANA — Japan House will have its spring open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, featuring tea ceremonies at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., hosted by the Chado Urasenke Tankokai Urbana-Champaign Association.

The tea ceremony will cost $5 per person and is free for Tomonokai members. Reservations are not required.

At 1 p.m,, Kokai Matsushita will give a presentation on "The Journey: Buddhism in My Life."

After working for 12 years as the director of human resources for UBS Securities Japan Ltd., the Investment Bank Division of Swiss Bank, Matsushita left to become a Tendai Sect monk and lead a quieter and more spiritually connected life.

Also part of the open house will be tours of the Japan House James A. and Lorene M. Bier Gardens at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. led by the designer and donor himself, Jim Bier. The Buddhism presentation and the garden tours are free and open to all.

Also at Japan House, UI Professor Emeritus Shozo Sato will teach a series of calligraphy workshops at 5:30 p.m. every Monday in April. No experience is needed.

Each workshop is $20 for Tomonokai members or students and $25 for all others. To make a reservation, call 244-9934 with credit card information.
