Books by the Bushel event this weekend
CHAMPAIGN — In partnership with Head Start of Savoy, the Junior League of Champaign-Urbana will host its annual Books by the Bushel fundraiser from Friday through Sunday at Barnes & Noble, 65 N Market St., C.
During the book fair, there will be several showcase events for children:
— Story time with the State Farm Bear at 11 a.m. Friday; with a Champaign police officer, at 9:15 a.m. Saturday; with Sangamon Elementary School Principal Mark Cabutti, noon Saturday; and with Urbana schools Superintendent Don Owens, 2 p.m. Sunday.
— A puppet show at 11 a.m. Saturday.
— Lauren Elizabeth signing copies of her book at 2 p.m. Saturday.
— The Central High School Drama Club performing scenes from "The Putnam County Spelling Bee," 1 p.m. Saturday.
The Junior League donates the Books by the Bushel books to more than 40 public and private schools in Champaign, Urbana and Mahomet.
The project starts when the school librarians give the league lists of books they want. During the three-day Books by the Bushel event, community members may purchase the books for donation to the school library of their choice. A bookplate is placed in each book to denote the donor or an honoree.
Last year, the Junior League donated more than 680 books and raised more than $10,000 through Books by the Bushel. For more information, visit juniorleaguecu.org.
