Girl Scouts get donation of 70-acre campground
SPRINGFIELD — Girl Scouts of Central Illinois will soon have a new 70-acre campground.
The Honey Bend Campground & Resort in Litchfield, about 130 miles southwest of Champaign, is being donated by Joe Scott Sr. and Loretta Scott, owners of Scott Properties in St. Louis, the organization announced.
The property has 12 cabins, a lodge, dining hall, RV and tent sites, a swimming pool, several lakes and hiking trails fishing and two nine-hole miniature golf courses.
Girl Scouts of Central Illinois CEO Pam Kovacevich said the organization is thrilled.
"This property will bring a whole new dimension to our outdoor education programming and compliment our existing camp properties," she said in a statement.
The Girl Scouts of Central Illinois already operates Camp Kiwanis in Mahomet, Camp Peairs in Hudson, Camp Tapawingo in Metamora and Camp Widjiwagan in Springfield.
The organization says it will become the owner of the Honey Bend property Sept. 29 and hopes to use it for some programming this fall].
Girl Scouts of Central Illinois serves 20,000 girls and 5,000 adult members in 38 Central Illinois counties, among them the East Central counties of Champaign, Douglas, DeWitt, Ford, Iroquois, Moultrie, Piatt and Vermilion.
