LIHEAP winter heating assistance. Appointments are still be scheduled by East Central Illinois Community Action Agency's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for eligible seniors for assistance with payments toward residential gas and electric bills. Eligible residents in Vermilion County may schedule appointments at 56 N. Vermilion St., Danville, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. or call 217-554-9110; in Ford and Iroquois counties, call 217-379-2071 and 815-265-4685, respectively.

Toy Drive. 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, now through Dec. 15, Stevick Senior Citizens Center, 15 E. Main St., C. The Stevick Center and the News Gazette Media are collecting toys for the Salvation Army to distribute to needy families at Christmas. Drop off new, unwrapped toys at the front desk of The News-Gazette.

All seniors are invited for finger foods, door prizes and entertainment. Free parking on east side of building. If you can, bring a new, unwrapped toy for our Toy Drive (now through Dec. 15). Senior Luncheon and Bingo. 11 a.m. Dec. 13, CRIS Healthy Aging Center, 309 N. Franklin St., Danville. A free healthy lunch and educational event for area seniors. Jessica Nemecz, LCPC and co-owner of Two Roads Wellness Clinic, will give information on coping with grief during the holidays. The Peace Meal Nutrition Program provides daily hot lunches at 11:30 a.m. for a small donation and a one-day advance reservation at various sites in Urbana, Champaign, Rantoul, Sidney, Mahomet (home-delivered only) and Homer.

The program is for people age 60 or older. For reservations or more information, call 800-543-1770.

Reservations for Monday will need to be made with the site by noon Friday.

Monday: Gold and spicy chicken breast fillet, potato casserole, seasoned green beans, dinner roll, peaches, butter or margarine (served with each meal), milk (served with each meal).

Tuesday: Taco salad with meat, cheese and beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and taco sauce, pineapple tidbits, taco chips, pudding.

Wednesday: Beef and noodles, mashed potatoes, Harvard beets, bread, cranberry oatmeal cookie.

Thursday: Ham and beans, copper carrots, cornbread, applesauce.

Friday: Pork chop in gravy, mashed potatoes, broccoli and cauliflower, dinner roll, cake with fruit.


Champaign-Urbana: Rides for grocery shopping in Champaign-Urbana city limits and rides for Champaign County residents to medical appointments can be arranged by contacting the Senior Resource Center of Family Service at 217-352-5100.

The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District provides senior citizens with a special card for free bus transportation in Champaign-Urbana and half-price taxi service. Call MTD at 217-384-8188 for more information.

Meals on Wheels. Family Service of Champaign County needs volunteers to deliver meals to home-bound seniors.

Senior transportation. Family Service of Champaign County offers volunteers to help seniors get to appointments, grocery stores, etc. There are no set times. Volunteer when it is convenient for you.

AARP Tax Aide Program. Previous tax experience a plus, but not necessary ... all training will be provided, starting in December. The actual tax preparation program begins on Feb. 1, at the new tax program location at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect Ave., C.
