A Lyceum Program to Honor Albert R. Lee. 7 p.m. Aug. 31, Bethel A.M.E. Church, 410 E. Park St., C. "A Legacy of African American Excellence." Remembered as the unofficial dean of black students during the first half of the 20th century at the University of Illinois, Lee served 52 years at the president's office, through seven administrations, retiring as chief clerk in 1947. He was a 36-year member of Bethel A.M.E. Church. Vanessa Rouillon, assistant professor at James Madison University and Albert Lee's scholar and biographer, will highlight his life and legacy. Main address presented by Cecilia Conrad, managing director, Office of Grants Management at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Presenters include Deborah Banks, Lee's great-niece; Sandra Gibbs, former associate executive director, National Council of Teachers in English; and Robert J. Fair Hope Children's Ministry's garage-sale fundraiser. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Bowman Avenue United Methodist Church, 911 N. Bowman Ave., Danville. Household items and attic treasures for sale. This is a fundraiser for the faith-based children's organization's building fund. The ministry is currently outgrowing its facility located behind Bowman Avenue United Methodist Church. This concert benefits the Men's and Women's SAFE (Substance Abuse-Free Environment) Houses; 12-month faith-based residential programs, administered by the Canaan Development Foundation.
