Three critically injured in rural intersection crash

SEYMOUR — Three people were listed in critical condition late Saturday at an Urbana hospital following a morning accident in western Champaign County.

Champaign County sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Vercler said the collision happened at a rural intersection about 3 1/2 miles south of Seymour at 9:55 a.m. and involved a car and a pickup truck.

Career center open house scheduled at Central

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school district is hosting an open house at the Central High School College and Career Center next week.

The open house is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 218 at Central High School, 610 W. University Ave., C.

Prairie North 2013 Disaster Drill

More than 15 local and state agencies took part in the first day of a three-day emergency response exercise April 11 to 13 called Prairie North 2013.They were at the  empty Abbott Acres apartment complex in Rantoul on Thursday, April 11, 2013.The agencies included local fire and police departments, area hospital and ambulance services, and Illinois emergency agencies.

Barkstall kicks off fitness program

CHAMPAIGN — Students at Barkstall Elementary are about to learn a lot about fitness.

The school is starting a schoolwide initiative to encourage physical activity called "Fitness is Fun." It's registered with Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, and students and teachers will log their physical activity every week.

Close race for Champaign school board

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school board race was close — so close that just 30 votes separated the second-place winner, who won a seat, from the fourth-place winner, who didn't.

Five candidates were running for three four-year terms on the school board.

Lynn Stuckey earned 1,739 votes, finishing second behind Scott MacAdam, who had 2,043. That's a difference of 304 votes.

Update: Severe thunderstorm watch issued for the area

The National Weather Service has canceled a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Champaign County, eastern Douglas County, northern Edgar County and southern Vermilion County and another one for northeastern Champaign County.

CHAMPAIGN — Scott MacAdam, Lynn Stuckey and Laurie Bonnett won the top votes in a close Champaign school board race for three contested four-year seats.

MacAdam won the most votes, with 2,043. Stuckey followed with 1,739 votes and then Bonnett with 1,721.

Champaign County United Way short of goal by 9 percent

CHAMPAIGN — Contributions to the United Way of Champaign County are running behind, with less than three months left to meet the agency’s $3.3 million goal.

As of Tuesday, the United Way had raised a bit over $3.03 million, about 9 percent behind where fundraising was at this time last year, says United Way President and CEO Sue Grey.

Life Remembered: Shields 'respected and a real gentleman'

Colleagues remember Lyle Shields as a gentleman who was easy to work with on the Champaign County Board.

Mr. Shields, who died Friday at the age of 89, served on the Champaign County Board for 41 years, including 10 years (1986-1996) as its chairman.
