Letter from Birdland: It's starting to look like spring

In Birdland, spring seems to be settling in. For weeks now, since before that last blizzard, in fact, the bulbs in my yard have been pushing up their greenery more slowly than usual.

Good morning from Birdland! Last night, the spring moon bounced off the snow and lit up the sky like daylight in a dream. Sometimes a big moon can keep me awake, but this time it was really calling to me.

Letter from Birdland: Getting up close and personal with cows

In Birdland, the calendar says spring is coming soon, and on a sunny day like today, 30 degrees can seem almost balmy.

But I'm writing from campus today because this weekend is the Engineering Open House and other open houses and tours. The University of Illinois is alive with kids — from grade school on up, walking in groups between exhibits.
