Anne Rivas, right, senior manager of the Wildlife Medical Clinic and third-year veterinary student at the University of Illinois, hands Qigiq (cq), a snowy owl, to team leader Randee Ardisana (cq), at the clinic in Urbana, Ill on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012. Rivas said the male juvenile owl was found by a local ornithologist in a rural Tolono field earlier this month. The owl was brought to the clinic on Jan. 3 where it underwent two surgeries on its badly fractured, left humerus. The owl is believed to be a result of an "eruption year" where an abundance of baby owls hatched in the Arctic this past year. The owls, looking for food, migrated south with several spotted in Champaign County. Qigiq will spend another month at the clinic, and if all goes well, he will go to rehabilitation with the goal of releasing him for his migration back north. The clinic, which depends on donations, has launched a new website with Qigiq being the first featured case. Donations can also be made by visiting the website at http: //go.illinois.edu/featured_wmc_case.
