Just Askin' | Change of fortune for Gordmans

Q: Did Gordmans ever close?

A: No, it did not. The store is still very much open.

In March 2017, the discount-department store announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and that it would be closing all 106 of its stores.

But a few weeks later, a company called Stage Stores bought Gordmans and kept open half the locations, including the one in Champaign at 1901 N. Market St.

Under new ownership, the company appears to be doing well and even opened a new store near Houston, the headquarters of Stage Stores.

Stage Stores also operates Goody's stores, the nearest being in Lincoln and Taylorville.
