Are adult stores required to put up fences?

The Lovers Playground locations in Champaign and Urbana both have fences surrounding their parking lots, but they're not required to.

"I don't know why they do that," said Fred Stavins, the Champaign city attorney. "We don't have adult regulations that would compel that."

While there's a rule in the Champaign liquor code prohibiting alcohol during "adult entertainment" performances, the stores are treated like any other store.

Patricia's, for example, on South Neil Street, doesn't have fences surrounding it.

The fences are presumably there to provide customers some privacy, but the manager at the Lovers Playground in Champaign declined to comment, referring The News-Gazette to the store's parent company, which did not return a request for comment.
