Just Askin' | High-tech upgrade for Champaign McDonald's

Q: What's happening at the McDonald's on Mattis Avenue?

A: It's being remodeled with digital kiosks, Bluetooth tables and digital drive-thru menu boards.

"McDonald's has launched its 'Experience of the Future,'" franchise owner Scott Miller said. "It's just a part of the new future of McDonald's that you're going to see over the next couple years."

The lobby at the McDonald's on Mattis in Champaign will close around Sept. 10, while the drive-thru will remain open, Miller said. The project will wrap up by Oct. 20.

"For every remodel, if the lobby is closed, then the drive-thru will be re-opened," he said.

All of the McDonald's in Champaign-Urbana are being remodeled. If you want to check out what they'll look like, the McDonald's on Cunningham Avenue in Urbana already has the digital kiosks.

"That finished at the end of July," he said. "They've been popular, and there's somebody there to teach you how to use them."

Customers can order at the kiosk, and food will be delivered to their table, which has Bluetooth to let the workers know where to take the food.

"You're going to see this in all McDonald's by the end of 2019," Miller said.
