Volunteers needed for cleanup in forest preserves
MAHOMET – Volunteers are sought for cleanup at any of the Champaign County Forest Preserve District areas.
To launch National Volunteer Week, the Champaign County Forest Preserve District is inviting groups to volunteer for a day of service.
The five forest preserve areas are Lake of the Woods in Mahomet, River Bend in Mahomet, Homer Lake in Homer, Middle Fork in Penfield and Sangamon River in Fisher.
All groups are welcome to help with a day of service from 1 to 4 p.m. April 19. Each group is asked to assign a leader to coordinate the group's participation and attend a planning meeting April 16, said Kim Horbas, volunteer coordinator for the forest preserve district.
The cleanup will greatly help the district, especially in a time of budget constraints, according to Horbas.
"It was a brutal winter," Horbas said. "A lot of trees had damage. It seems menial, but it's important to get it all off the ground before mowing starts."
April 19 is the start of National Volunteer Week; April 22 is Earth Day and April 24 is Arbor Day, so it all ties in perfectly with the forest preserve district, she said. For information, contact Horbas at 493-7199 or khorbas<@>ccfpd.org.
