Lecture to focus on e-waste issues
CHAMPAIGN – The founder of PC Rebuilders & Recyclers will be on the University of Illinois campus Wednesday to discuss "The Truth, Tragedy and Transformation of E-Waste."
Willie Cade, who founded PCRR in 2000 to provide refurbished personal computers to schools, non-profits and at-risk children, will speak at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Illinois Ballroom of the I Hotel and Conference Center, 1900 S. First St., C.
Cade will discuss the nearly 3 billion electronic products owned by Americans, and the tremendous waste that occurs when they are cast off. He figures only 15 percent of the products are recycled, even though nearly two-thirds of them still work when discarded.
Cade's free public talk is part of a lecture series sponsored by the Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability on campus.
Cade is chair of the Industry Advisory Council of the newly launched Sustainable Electronics Initiative, a program of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center.
People attending the lecture can bring their old cell phones for recycling, with proceeds from the drive going to local nonprofit organizations.
