40th Earth Day bringing week of C-U activities

The 40th annual Earth Day on Thursday is the inspiration behind a week of activities in Champaign-Urbana.

Events include a campfire at a meditation center, talks on environmental initiatives and a concert.

SUNDAY

The Ananda Liina Yoga & Meditation Center offers tours of alternative energy technologies at its site from 2 to 6 p.m.

From 6 to 9:30 p.m. a $5 vegetarian meal will be served. Afterward, a campfire will be lighted. Registration is required at 369-1076.

The center encourages car pooling and bicycling to its site at 2308 N. High Cross Road, U. One car-pooling group plans to meet at the Common Ground Food Co-op in Lincoln Square Village at 1:15 p.m.

Monday:

Parkland College, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., C; campuswide trash cleanup, 10:30 a.m. to noon; sustainability Quiz Bowl, Flag Lounge, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; recycling game and information booth, College Center, 12:30 to 2 p.m.

Tuesday

Parkland College prairie and pond planting and cleanup, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; information booths in College Center, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; talk by Jamie Ellis of Grand Prairie Friends, Flag Lounge, 11 a.m. to noon; talk by Sandy Mason with program on gardening with native plants, Flag Lounge, noon to 1 p.m.

Wednesday

Parkland College, ribbon cutting for new bike racks, 9:30 a.m.; information and demonstrations, College Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; transportation expo, College Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; "Recycled Rhythms" music by Chad Dunn, Flag Lounge, 11:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Thursday

Screening of "Food, Inc." documentary and discussion, Room L-111, Parkland College; 9 to 11:50 a.m.

Lunch and herb giveaway, South Lounge, Parkland College; 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Think Green/Win Green contest winners announced, 1 p.m.

Earth Day rally and Day of Conversation on Earth Day; near Anniversary Plaza on the University of Illinois campus; noon to 1 p.m.; talks by city mayors, university administrator and students representing the Student Sustainability Committee and Students for Environmental Concerns.

Discussion on "In Defense of Food," Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Parkland College; 2 to 3 p.m.

Free bus rides from the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District all day.

Friday

Green Business Expo; Flag Lounge and College Center, Parkland College; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday

Battle of the Bands featuring So Many Dynamos of Edwardsville, Vanattica, Year of the Bobcat, Shark Bandit, Benny Wil, Seventeen Sisters, Seldan, The Lost Years and Heyokas; outer grounds, Parkland College; 3 to 9 p.m.; sponsored by the college, its radio station (WPCD-88.7 FM) and Pogo Studio of Champaign.
