Piatt County tops soybean yields in state

Piatt County came in first place for the state's highest soybean yields last year while Carroll County in northwest Illinois led the way in corn yields.

Piatt County's soybean yields averaged 63.3 bushels per acre, followed by Moultrie County with 62.8 and Christian County with 60.4 bushels per acre. The statewide average for soybeans last year was 51.5 bushels per acre, a record high.

As for corn, Carroll County came in with 189.8 bushels per acre, followed by Ogle at 183.4 and Boone with 182.5 bushels per acre. The statewide average for corn was a disappointing 157 bushels per acre last year.

The Illinois Field Office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service released the final figures Monday afternoon. Data for remaining counties and other crops can be found online.

As for the number of acres harvested in Illinois in 2010, McLean and Livingston Counties tied with 270,000 acres of soybeans harvested, followed by Iroquois with 262,000. Champaign County farmers harvested 244,500 acres of soybeans for a total of 13.7 million bushels.

The leader as far as acres of corn harvested and amount of corn produced was McLean County with 357,000 acres harvested and 60.5 million bushels produced. Iroquois County came in second for corn acres harvested with 354,000, followed by La Salle with 333,000. La Salle was second in corn production with 54.2 million bushels, and third was Livingston with 52.3 million corn bushels produced.
