Danville seeks Walldogs agreement with railroad

DANVILLE — Danville city officials are seeking permission from the Norfolk Southern Railway to put panels on the side of a railroad bridge for a painted mural.

The Danville City Council's public services committee on Tuesday will consider  an agreement with the railroad that will allow painters involved in the Walldogs 2.0 event next month in Danville to paint a mural on the west side of the Norfolk Southern bridge over Fairchild Street just east of Danville High School.

The committee meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the city's municipal building, 17 W. Main St., Danville. If the public services committee approves the agreement, it will move on to the full council at its Aug. 2 meeting. Then it will have to be signed by railroad officials, according to City Engineer David Schnelle, giving permission for the mural to be painted during the Walldogs event Aug. 3-6.

Schnelle said the agreement doesn't involve anything more than getting in writing the railroad's permission for the panels to be placed on the side of the bridge.

The Walldogs are a group of painters from different states who hold mural-painting events in communities that raise the funds to host them. The Walldogs made their first visit to Danville last summer, painting several murals in the downtown, and they will return next month to paint additional murals, including the one planned for the Norfolk Southern bridge over Fairchild Street.
