UI theater group to present two plays this week

CHAMPAIGN – The Inner Voices Social Issues Theatre at the University of Illinois will present two plays this week: "Midnight Bullfight" by Lauren Gunderson and "little explosions" by Mathew Green.

The first is about a group of Freedom Riders stranded in Tennessee during the Civil Rights Movement. The second play, set in contemporary times, is about a high school incident that leads to assumptions and misconceptions.

Inner Voices will present the two short plays at 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 p.m. Thursday at the Armory Free Theatre at Sixth and Armory streets, Champaign. Admission is free. Inner Voices also will present the plays at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Oglesby Lounge at the Florida Avenue Residence Hall.

The Inner Voices Social Issues Theatre produces theater pieces that address social and health issues. The theater was formed in spring 1995 to address binge drinking on college campuses and to provide an opportunity for students to create and perform social issues theater.

A discussion will take place after each performance. Each post-performance discussion is led by trained professionals from the UI's Counseling Center and McKinley Health Center as well as students in social work, women's studies, theater studies and health-related fields.

Inner Voices is sponsored by the Counseling Center, McKinley Health Center and the Department of Theatre.
