Goal for 2011 Relay for Life: $300,000
CHAMPAIGN — Relay for Life Champaign County has a $300,000 fund-raising goal this year. says co-chair Michelle Grindley.
And there's less than a week left to get there.
Relay for Life Champaign County is set for June 18 at Centennial High School, 913 S. Crescent Drive, C.
The relay is the American Cancer Society's annual signature fund-raising event, intended to pay tribute to cancer survivors and honors the memory of loved ones who have died of the disease.
Relay team members will walk around the track, starting with the opening ceremony and first lap for survivors at 6 p.m., and keep walking through 6 a.m. the following morning.
Grindley, a Philo resident who has been involved in Relay for Life since college, said some of the highlights include:
— The lighting of luminaria bags that line the track and the lap of silence honoring cancer survivors and the memory of loved ones who have died.
— The fight-back ceremony at 9:30 p.m.
This year's event also includes food vendors, entertainment, activities and a kids fun and games area with inflatables that will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. There's a $5 admission charge for the kids to play on the inflatables.
Everything is open to the public and people are encouraged to come, walk a lap or two and stay as long as they want, Grindley said.
