Tony Rice performance canceled at Ellnora

URBANA — The Tony Rice performance at noon Friday at the Ellnora Guitar Festival has been canceled due to a death in the Rice family.

“All of us at Krannert Center are deeply saddened by this news and join fans and friends all over the world in supporting the Rice family during this time,” David Spelman, artistic adviser to the festival, said in a news release from Krannert.

According to The Bluegrass Blog, John Christian Scott, the stepson of Tony Rice, died last month in a head-on collision in Burlington, N.C. Mr. Scott was riding his motorcycle.

Replacing Rice in the free noon-hour concert will be string virtuoso Steve Dawson on acoustic guitar. Spelman said Dawson had been on the Ellnora wish list for some time. Dawson will be joined by several as-yet-to-be-named guests, most likely a few of the other artists performing at the three-day festival, which opens tonight  and features 20 or so acts, half of them free.
