The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network, http://www.foodallergy.org, is recommended by several mothers with allergic kids. Among its information is how to read a label for a peanut-free diet and the following advice:

-- Avoid foods that contain peanuts or artificial nuts, goobers, monkey nuts and peanut protein hydrolysate among other items.

-- Peanuts are sometimes found in African, Asian and Mexican dishes; baked goods; candy; and nougat among other items.

-- Remember mandelonas are peanuts soaked in almond flavoring; arachis oil is peanut oil; sunflower seeds are often produced on equipment shared with peanuts.

-- The FDA exempts highly refined peanut oil (not cold pressed, expeller pressed or extruded) from being labeled as an allergen; but follow your doctor's advice.

Lunch suggestions from FAAN (http://www.foodallergy.org/page/lunch-suggestions) include:

-- Melon balls (cantaloupe and honeydew) combined with cherry tomatoes and chicken chunks.

-- Small amount of tomato sauce added to cooked pasta for color and flavor; keep warm in a thermos.

-- Pasta salad with broccoli and tuna or ham chunks.

-- Apple cut into chunks with added pork cubes, seedless grapes and celery slices.

-- Artificial nuts such as peanuts that have been deflavored and treated with other flavorings.

-- Baked goods such as baking mixes, breads and cakes and pastries with unknown ingredients. Especially risky are carrot cake, pumpkin cake or pie and fruit and nut rolls.

-- Breakfast foods such as cereals, muesli, breakfast or health bars.

-- Main dishes such as Asian foods like satay, pad thai and egg rolls; vegetarian dishes; and chili.

-- Salad dressings and sauces; gravy, pesto, prepared sauces, salad dressings and condiments like barbecue sauce and Worcestershire sauce.

-- Soups, bouillon and soups that use nuts as thickeners.
