Furniture Lounge to open second store in downtown Urbana
Furniture Lounge, the retro furniture store in downtown Champaign, will add a second store in downtown Urbana next month.
The Urbana store will be at 126 W. Main St., with owners Scott Schaub and Amanda McWilliams shooting for an Aug. 15 opening.
Furniture Lounge focuses on midcentury modern furniture from the 1950s through the 1980s.
But the Champaign store at 9 E. University Ave. carries less furniture these days and more small decor items and clothing, Schaub said.
The Urbana store is where most of the furniture will be, he added. It will carry items sold on consignment as well as those he and McWilliams find and bring in themselves. The furniture mix will also include some traditional pieces along with the retro, along with lamps and other home items.
The furniture is moving to the new location largely because of the parking shortage in downtown Champaign and the fact that most of the store's customers are older adults who aren't willing to put up with the inconvenience, Schaub said.
"Downtown Champaign isn't as convenient as it is in Urbana," he added.
Cupcakes Monticello-style
A new cupcake shop will open soon in downtown Monticello.
Cakes by the Cup, at 101 N. Market St., is a venture of Tina Patrick and her daughter, Shandel Barclay, who have handled pastries and catering for Mongomery's on the Square restaurant in Monticello.
Patrick said she and her daughter will continue to make pastries for Montgomery's, and will also offer pastries, breakfast items and coffees along with the cupcakes at their own place.
Cakes by the Cup will offer five kinds of cupcakes a day, among them margarita and fudge ribbon, and all of them will be made from scratch with butter and cream, Patrick said.
She and her daughter plan to open daily at 7 a.m., and are hoping to have their shop ready to open by Aug. 1, she said.
They will also make cupcakes for weddings and other events.
Moved
Cakes by the Cup is in the former location of Two Loose Screws, a gifts, crafts and antiques shop in Monticello. That shop has moved to 216 W. Washington St. for more space and visibility, said Linda Morenz, one of the owners.
The store's hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Grand opening
Christie Clinic is inviting the public to a grand-opening event at its new satellite clinic in Urbana on Monday.
The clinic is at 1710 E. Windsor Road, just east of Philo Road.
After the ribbon is cut at 9 a.m., the clinic staff will offer tours, giveaways and complimentary blood pressure and cholesterol screenings until noon.
The new Urbana clinic is offering pediatrics and MRI diagnostics and will soon have family medicine and convenient care open.
Back-to-school events starting
The Tanger Outlet Center in Tuscola hopes to lure back-to-school shoppers with a bonus: Spend $150 or more at the stores, and get 10 free music downloads from the Universal Music Group catalog.
Bring receipts to the Tanger customer service center the same day as the purchases. Music cards are available until they last, according to the mall management. Through Aug. 10, customers can also enter to win one of four Apple iPod Nanos, with no purchase required.
The O'Charley's restaurant at 730 W. Town Center Blvd, C, is running a "Stuff the Bus" promotion Monday through Aug. 10. Customers can donate new school supplies by placing them in boxes in the restaurant lobby. The donated items will go to needy children served by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
