WDWS/WHMS Radio receives three broadcasting awards
CHAMPAIGN – WDWS/WHMS Radio won three honors at the Illinois Broadcasters Association "Silver Dome" Awards ceremony last week.
The stations won awards for best local newscast, best live coverage of an event and best sports play-by-play.
The best local newscast award was given for the 2 p.m. newscast on Nov. 7, 2008, the day that fire destroyed the Metropolitan Building in downtown Champaign.
"This was a collaborative award-winning effort involving Dave Shaul, Carol Vorel and Patrick Pfingsten backed up by the rest of our team," said Mike Haile, general manager of the radio stations.
The award for best live coverage of an event was for team coverage of the arrest of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich in December. That involved the efforts of Vorel, Shaul, Pfingsten, Brian Barnhart, Jim Turpin and a support team from the station.
"This was our second win in a row in this category," Haile said. "We won it a year ago for the FutureGen story."
Brian Barnhart won the best sports play-by-play award for his work on the Illinois-Missouri basketball game last December in St. Louis.
Barnhart won the same award last year for his 2007 call of Illinois upsetting then-No. 1 Ohio State in football.
