Mahomet grocery gets award for being green

MAHOMET – A Mahomet supermarket is among 11 food businesses nationwide to receive a Green Grocer Award from Progressive Grocer magazine.

What earned the Mahomet IGA the honor was an innovative geothermal system that helps minimize the store's heating and cooling costs.

Since the magazine announced the awards in its March issue, "we've had a number of grocers of all sizes come" to take a look, store owner Brooks Marsh said.

Specifically, the store was recognized for installing a heating and cooling system powered by geothermal heat pump technology.

That was one of 11 recommendations for energy efficiency Marsh received from Lon Hoover, an engineer working in cooperation with the Smart Energy Design Assistance Center at the University of Illinois.
