Gold's Gym in Champaign closing Friday

CHAMPAIGN — Gold's Gym in Champaign will close at the end of business Friday, the franchise owner said Thursday.

Matt Welsh said the gym, at 1914 Round Barn Road, had been battling a weak economy and increased competition.

He said a recent arrangement to sell the gym to a larger Gold's Gym franchisee fell through last Friday for reasons he didn't totally understand.

Welsh, who had operated the gym the last 5 1/2 years, said it had about 900 members, down from past years.

He said most members pay by the month, but some had prepaid their memberships.

"I'm not 100 percent sure what will happen with those prepaid memberships," he said.

Welsh acquired the gym in 2006 from Dan McCulley, who had converted his existing fitness facility, The Body Firm, to a Gold's Gym franchise in 1999.

I was a member when Dan owned the buisness. It was a nice gym to go to. It's just depressing to see all these buisnesses that are closing.

Hope the members who paid in advance get their money back.

Well here we go - the tax-exempt, big donor, YMCA opens today and one privately owned gym closes tomorrow.

Please have an idea of what you are talking about before posting a comment.

If you have a private agenda that you are looking to promote, do it elsewhere.

Obviously you never visited  Gold's gym.  It was poorly managed, it was dirty and it was a disgrace to the franchise.

The members cared more about the gym then the owners.  I am qualified to comment because I am a member, I have experienced the demise of the business and will share in the financial loss with the gym closing.

While I do not intend on joing the "Y", it will be a welcome addition to the community. While the Y may not pay taxes, it will contribute a great deal more to CU than anyone currently associated with the ownership of the current Gold's gym ever did..

I was a member till 4 months back for the last 2+ years in Gold gym/Champaign. Even after termination and not going there I was being charged for next 2 months- what a business! Most treadmills were not working, as well as the ellipticals. Lot of noise but not real physical work out there- I noticed lot of old people there.Restrooms and wash rooms were bad.

I am happy to say that I joined charter fitness which provides so much eqipment for $20 compared to $25 at Gold gym and much silent crowd and really focussed members- you feel like having a real workout everyday

"I noticed a lot of old people there"???? What the heck is that??? You, my friend, will be old one day as well. I am not old, just someone who knows how to show the elderly some respect.

It was not as a disrespect but as a concern- I myself am 60-  I have some acquaintances among them-  My remark was that where they will be going once the Gold Gym gets closed- some of them may have been members from the inception in 1999- who knows

I went to this Gold's location a few years ago when Dan still owned it. The gym was clean, maintained and was fluid with the industry. Dan would greet you and make you feel welcome everytime you came in for a workout. The shelves were stocked with merchandise and fitness drinks/snacks. The prices were reasonable. I liked the gym very much but went elsewhere for scheduling reasons after Dan sold it. I recently went back to Gold's (for one workout) about a month ago. I was shocked. The gym was dirty. Equipment was broken. The owner was rude. The shelves were barren and dusty. And I don't think a single thing had been changed since Dan had owned it. I was very disappointed. I cannot say I am surprised by this development. Good riddens, Mr. Welsh.

I am a new member starting 1/24/2012. I like some classes at this Gold's GYM, the people there are very nice and I have paid in advance for a year membership. The "close" is really a bad news to me. Will some one tell me what to do?  Will I get my money back?
