Danville getting an app all its own

DANVILLE — Smartphone users have a multitude of mobile applications to choose from, and now there's even an app for Danville.

Joe Massey with ATD Marketing, a Vermilion County-based business, decided to design an app for the Danville area that features information about restaurants, parks, museums, cultural and civic organizations, schools, churches and more.

As he became familiar with the technology, Massey said, he got the idea to create an app for the Danville area and got the cooperation of the city, Vermilion County, Vermilion Advantage, Downtown Danville Inc. and the Danville Area Visitors and Convention Bureau to provide information.

He said the app, titled "From Danville To ...," is intended to be a community resource for those who live in this area.

The app is free to those who download it on their phones, but Massey charges some businesses and organizations to provide certain types of information through it.

It also includes information about Fountain, Warren and Vermillion counties in Indiana.

The app is available for iPhones as well as Android, BlackBerry and Windows phones and can be downloaded from Apple's App Store or Google Play. Links to the download sites can be accessed on a smartphone at http://atdmarketing.com/app/app_download.htm or by texting "atdapps" to 90210 and following the links provided.

The app also includes listings of local businesses that are using this new technology to market themselves in the community through graphics, copy, video and other electronic media, according to Massey.

Businesses can offer specials through QR coupons, which use Quick Response codes that are scanned with a smartphone to automatically download information.

Massey said some of the specials are available only through the mobile app, giving phone users access to deals.

He said it also gives businesses an opportunity to develop customer loyalty by requiring that the QR codes, which are displayed at the businesses, be scanned multiple times to access the discounts.

The app also includes an events section where local businesses and organizations can list activities.

Massey said it's an ongoing project because he will continue to add information in the various categories and recruit more businesses.

The app can be previewed at http://atdmarketing.com/preview/default.htm. The page also includes information for businesses and organizations interested in a listing in the mobile app.
