CHAMPAIGN — TGI Friday's plans to open Dec. 17 in the former Chevy's Fresh-Mex building at 103 W. Marketview Drive, C, the restaurant's operator announced Thursday.
Curtis Akers of LeRoy has been hired as general manager, and about 120 people are expected to be employed there, according to a release from Fifth Day Restaurants, owner and operator of the new TGI Friday's.
The casual-dining chain had a restaurant at Trade Centre South for 20 years, but the franchisee for that restaurant closed it when the franchise agreement expired this year.
WCT Properties of East Peoria purchased the Chevy's location in July and renovated the building for Fifth Day Restaurants.
TGI Friday's has more than 900 restaurants in more than 60 countries. The local restaurant is in the process of hiring bartenders, servers and kitchen staff.
When William Torchia announced plans in August to return TGI Friday's to Champaign, he told The News-Gazette he liked the Marketview Drive location's proximity to Interstate 74 and Market Place Shopping Center.
Torchia said he had TGI Friday's restaurants in Peoria, Moline, Quincy and Rockford.
