3 banks upgraded, 4 downgraded in ratings

Three area banks were upgraded and four were downgraded in the latest ratings from the BauerFinancial rating service, based on data for the quarter that ended Sept. 30.

First Financial Bank of Terre Haute, Ind. — which has area branches in Champaign, Urbana, Mahomet, Danville, Westville, Ridge Farm and Charleston — was downgraded from 5-star ("superior") to 4-star ("excellent").

Also dropping from 5-star to 4-star was Hardware State Bank in Lovington.

Two banks — Citizens State Bank, with offices in Milford and Crescent City, and the Dewey Bank, with offices in Dewey and Saybrook — slid from 4-star ("excellent") to 31/2-star ("good").

On the flip side, Fisher National Bank returned to 5-star status. The bank, with offices in Fisher and Mahomet, fell to the 3-star level three years ago but subsequently recovered. It had been rated 4-star in the previous ratings, issued for the quarter that ended June 30.

Also rising from 4-star to 5-star was United Community Bank, with offices in Oakwood and Danville.

Meanwhile, Milford Building & Loan in Milford rose from 3-star ("adequate") to 31/2-star ("good").

One bank — Citizens National Bank, with offices in Paris and Oakland — disappeared from the ratings because it merged into First Farmers Bank & Trust of Converse, Ind.

Citizens National had a 3-star rating for the quarter that ended June 30; First Farmers Bank & Trust of Converse had a 4-star rating for the quarter that ended Sept. 30.

Also disappearing from the ratings was Farmer City State Bank, which merged into Heartland Bank & Trust.

The other 67 banks in the area retained the same ratings they had at the close of the quarter that ended June 30.

BauerFinancial bases its ratings on capital ratios, profitability trends, levels of delinquent loans, charge-offs and repossessed assets, liquidity, historical data and supervisory ratings by regulatory agencies.

BauerFinancial is one of several bank-rating services. It differentiates itself from others by making its ratings accessible to the public.

Nearly 60 percent of area banks received BauerFinancial's highest rating of 5-star. No area banks received the lowest rating — zero stars — and no area banks got 1-star ("troubled") or 2-star ("problematic") ratings. Only two area banks got 3-star ("adequate") ratings.

Here's the breakdown of BauerFinancial's ratings of 75 banks with offices in East Central Illinois based on data from the quarter that ended Sept. 30:
