Furniture, mattress store to open next to Planet Fitness

CHAMPAIGN — American Freight Furniture and Mattress plans to open a store adjacent to Planet Fitness in the Shops at Glenn Park in west Champaign, according to a release from Ramshaw Real Estate.

The retailer has leased 32,000 square feet between Planet Fitness and Apria Healthcare.

Jon Cahen, American Freight's advertising director, said he didn't know of a projected opening date but estimated the store might open in about two months, pending remodeling work.

American Freight, based in Delaware, Ohio, operates more than 80 stores in the U.S., many of them clustered in the Great Lakes states, Florida and the states in between.

The closest stores are in Decatur; Terre Haute, Ind.; and Lafayette, Ind.

The company's merchandise includes unclaimed freight, canceled orders, closeouts and overruns, according to the American Freight website. The business says it uses "modest warehouses and no expensive showrooms."

American Freight carries sofas, love seats, recliners, mattresses, bedroom furniture, dinettes, coffee tables and children's furniture.

Cahen said American Freight stores generally employ about 10 people. Typical hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays, he added.

Nearly all the space at the Shops at Glenn Park — formerly Champaign Village — has been leased, with only a few thousand square feet of the 143,000-square-foot space available, Ramshaw spokeswoman Chantelle Hougland said.

County Market, at 1914 Glenn Park Drive, and Planet Fitness, at 2002 Glenn Park Drive, are the center's major anchors.
