Common Ground seeking Champaign location to expand
CHAMPAIGN — Common Ground Food Co-Op wants to build a second store — this time in Champaign — and is looking for a location, General Manager Jacqueline Hannah said in a release.
The food co-op, which recently expanded its location at Urbana's Lincoln Square Village, wants the second store to be similar in size to the 11,000-square-foot Urbana store.
"We're planning for it to be a full-service store with a large local and organic produce department, a great deli, beer and wine, a fresh local meats case and more," Hannah said.
Common Ground hopes to identify a location by the end of this year and begin construction during the second half of 2014, the release stated.
Hannah said the success of the Urbana store has exceeded forecasts.
"The sales demand and our market research has made it clear we're ready to start planning for a Champaign store," she said.
Todd Sweet, the cooperative's board president, said a second store in Champaign "will allow Common Ground to serve even more people in our community."
Common Ground is a cooperatively owned business with more than 4,900 owners, but the store is open to all shoppers.
Hannah said the co-op donated more than $35,000 to charities chosen by Common Ground's owners in 2012.
