Network products distributor to open Champaign branch

CHAMPAIGN — Graybar Electric Co., a distributor of electrical, communications and data networking products, will open an office in Champaign's Apollo industrial park to serve customers in East Central Illinois.

The 10,000-square-foot branch office at 301 Mercury Drive, C, will employ six to eight people, said company spokeswoman Maureen Hergenroether.

It will have a local sales team and provide local inventory, delivery and counter services.

"The Champaign-Urbana market has historically been serviced through our East Peoria and Springfield offices," Hergenroether said.

Having physical inventory in East Central Illinois will improve service to local customers, she said.

The branch will serve Champaign, Vermilion, Clark, Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Effingham, Ford, Iroquois, Macon, Moultrie, Piatt and Shelby counties. Brian Gauthier is the branch manager.

St. Louis-based Graybar is a Fortune 500 corporation and one of the largest employee-owned companies in North America. It specializes in supply-chain management and logistics services.

In 2012, it ranked No. 465 on the Fortune 500 list, with $5.4 billion in revenues. The business ranked 65th on Forbes' list of America's largest private companies.

Graybar has a network of nearly 240 distribution facilities in North America, with about 7,400 employees. Founded in 1869 by Elisha Gray and Enos Barton, the company was originally known as Gray & Barton.

The company stocks and sells products from thousands of manufacturers and has hundreds of thousands of customers, according to its website.
