Dixon named chief photographer for News-Gazette

CHAMPAIGN — John C. Dixon has been named chief photographer for The News-Gazette.

He will lead a photo staff of four full-time and two part-time photojournalists in providing visual coverage for the newspaper and its website, http://www.news-gazette.com.

Dixon succeeds Photo Editor Darrell Hoemann, who retired in July.

Dixon's duties include scheduling staff photographers, coordinating photo stringers and directing photo and video coverage of breaking news.

He will work with reporters and editors in news, sports and features to provide photo coverage of news events and come up with creative ways to illustrate enterprise stories.

Dixon joined The News-Gazette in 1974 as a photo lab technician. He later became a part-time photographer for the newspaper, shooting high school football games while he was in high school.

He returned to the staff in 1979 as a part-time photographer and became full-time shortly afterward.
