CHAMPAIGN — Ruler Foods is preparing to open a third store in Champaign-Urbana — with the newest to be located just east of the Big Lots store in Champaign.
A building permit for the discount food store was recently issued by the city of Champaign. The permit was for $537,740 worth of work in renovating the space at 2002 W. Springfield Ave., C.
The store would be on the east end of the building that houses Big Lots and Dollar General. The vacant spot was once home to an off-track betting parlor.
Ruler Foods, which is affiliated with Kroger, opened two stores in Champaign-Urbana earlier this year. One store is in the Champaign Town Center shopping center near H.H. Gregg, and the other is in the former Jerry's IGA space on Philo Road in Urbana.
The chain also opened a store in the former Save-A-Lot building at East Main and Griffin streets in Danville.
Ruler Foods sells Kroger-branded private-label groceries and is owned by Seymour, Ind.-based JayC Food Stores, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger. A call placed to JayC on Thursday afternoon was not immediately returned.
The chain has opened several stores in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky in recent years.
