CHAMPAIGN — A grand opening celebration for the new Eden Supportive Living community in downtown Champaign is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served, tours will be given and entertainment will be provided by the Illini Musical Group and New Orleans Jazz Machine.
The facility at 222 N. State St. provides assisted-living arrangements for physically disabled people between ages 22 and 64.
By combining apartment-style housing with personal care and services, the center allows people to live independently without the burden of maintaining a home.
A support staff is available 24 hours a day for scheduled and unscheduled needs. The center's amenities include a library, dining room, movie theater, activity center, resident training kitchen and several cybercenters.
Two floors of the building are already filled, with another 40 people scheduled to move in over the next few months, according to an Eden release.
"We are excited to open our doors ... and build upon the proud tradition this community has in bettering the lives of those living with disabilities," said Mitch Hamblet, Eden's founder and president, in the release.
